Harlan Coben’s ‘Missing You’ on Netflix Ending, Explained

As a seasoned crime-drama enthusiast with a penchant for unraveling complex narratives, I must say that “Missing You” is a gripping and emotional rollercoaster ride that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats. The series masterfully weaves together a tapestry of lies, deceit, and redemption, painting a vivid picture of the human capacity for forgiveness and the lengths people will go to protect their loved ones.

The story’s central characters are well-developed, each with their own unique backstories that add depth and richness to the plot. The protagonist, Kat, is a strong-willed woman who has suffered immense loss but refuses to be broken. Her journey of self-discovery and personal growth is both inspiring and heartbreaking, as she grapples with the truth about her father’s death and ultimately finds closure.

One cannot discuss “Missing You” without acknowledging the exceptional performances by the entire cast, particularly the chemistry between Kat and Josh. Their on-screen relationship feels authentic, and their emotional bond is palpable, even during the most intense scenes. The actors skillfully navigate the complexities of their characters, making it easy for viewers to empathize with them and root for their happiness.

The plot twists and turns are expertly executed, keeping viewers guessing until the very end. However, the series does not rely solely on shock value; instead, it delves deep into the human psyche, exploring themes of guilt, forgiveness, and the consequences of our actions. The climax is both satisfying and poignant, leaving viewers with a sense of closure while still allowing for room to imagine what might happen next in the lives of the characters.

In terms of production value, “Missing You” is top-notch, boasting beautiful cinematography and a haunting soundtrack that complements the emotional weight of each scene. The series’ pacing is well-balanced, ensuring that viewers are never left feeling bored or overwhelmed.

All in all, I highly recommend “Missing You” to anyone who enjoys thought-provoking crime dramas with a strong emotional core. It’s a testament to the human spirit and the power of forgiveness, serving as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for redemption.

And now, for a little humor: I couldn’t help but laugh at the irony of the catfishing scheme using Josh’s likeness. Who would have thought that the man who unwittingly killed his own father would end up being used to steal money from unsuspecting victims? Life truly has a twisted sense of humor sometimes!

Warning: Spoilers for Missing You.

According to Harlan Coben’s novel, the Netflix series titled “Missing You” is a gripping mystery-thriller that revolves around Detective Inspector Kat Donovan (played by Rosalind Eleazar). Kat is an expert in locating missing individuals. One fateful night, she stumbles upon her ex-fiancé Josh’s profile on a dating app, setting off a chain of events that turns her world inside out. Over a decade ago, Josh mysteriously vanished after proposing to Kat and leaving their shared home without a trace, all while Kat was grappling with the murder of her father, fellow police officer Clint (Lenny Henry). As if this wasn’t enough, years later, Kat’s life seems to be falling apart once more. However, as is often the case with Coben adaptations, things may not be as they seem.

In her contemplation of Josh seemingly coming back, Kat uncovers the truth that Monte Leburne (Marc Warren), who admitted to killing her father Clint, wasn’t the true culprit. Instead, he was framed and paid to take the blame. As she delves deeper into the identity of the real murderer, she stumbles upon the fact that Josh visited Monte the day before his disappearance. The plot thickens when a teenager named Brendan Fells (Oscar Kennedy) declares that his mother has gone missing due to her online relationship with Josh. However, Brendan has never physically encountered the man. All he possesses is an image from Josh’s online dating profile. With more unanswered questions than she knows what to do with, Kat’s professional inquiry and personal investigation intertwine, and it seems that Josh plays a crucial role in all of it.

Why Did Josh Suddenly Leave Kat?

Following her father’s demise, Josh silently departed from Kat without a goodbye. After conferring with Monte in prison, he hastily gathered all his belongings and deserted his fiancée at a time when she was particularly distraught. In the final episode of the show, Josh reappears, offering feeble justifications for his departure. Despite this, Kat accepts his explanation without question. Josh claims that he discovered Clint’s shady business dealings with the notorious local gangster, Calligan (played by James Nesbitt), and couldn’t bring himself to inform Kat.

It’s understandable that, given how much Kat cherished her father, and realizing that revealing his corruption would shatter her, Josh opted to depart instead. He felt unable to confront her because he couldn’t bear the burden of keeping such a significant secret from her, at least according to him. Although it’s true that Josh does have deep affection for Kat and might not have wanted to leave her back then, it’s evident there are hidden reasons for his disappearance that go beyond what he has disclosed.

What Does Titus’ Operation Have to Do With Josh?

Similar to how Kat stumbled upon Josh’s profile on a dating platform, women such as Dana (Lisa Faulkner) and Brendan’s mother also found his profile. Interestingly enough, Josh wasn’t aware of the profile or involved in its creation. Unbeknownst to him, his likeness was being exploited in a catfishing scam masterminded by Titus (Steve Pemberton) and his associates. This elaborate scheme was being run from a high-end dog breeding farm, where the cunning businessman was using Josh’s image to swindle money from vulnerable, affluent individuals.

In one of the numerous images he utilized, Titus forced individuals to empty their bank accounts prior to being eliminated. Regrettably, on this occasion, a detective intervened, causing Titus’ operation to go up in flames before his capture.

Who Actually Killed Clint?

As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of film-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that this plot twist is reminiscent of the classic “reunited and it feels so good” trope, but with a darker turn. The storyline seems to follow the typical pattern of two lovers reuniting after a long separation, only to unravel a shocking truth that shatters their world. However, what sets this apart is the element of betrayal, as the beloved character Josh turns out to be involved in the death of Kat’s father. It’s always intriguing when a story takes an unexpected turn and exposes the depths to which people will go to hide their secrets, especially when those secrets involve the ones we hold dear. This plot twist would certainly keep audiences on the edge of their seats, as they grapple with the question of whether Josh was truly responsible for Kat’s father’s death or if there is more to the story. Overall, it’s a testament to the power of storytelling and the ability of a well-crafted plot twist to captivate an audience and keep them guessing until the very end.

One evening, as Kat walked home, her friend Mary Malone (Aqua) stumbled upon evidence that Clint was involved in an affair with a man named Cyril Nri (Parker). Fearing his family’s reaction, Clint visited Aqua at her residence to offer an explanation. In concern for Clint’s actions, Aqua contacted Josh who was en route to her place. Unaware to all parties, Richard Armitage’s character (Stagger) was also heading there as Clint’s behavior seemed unusual when he asked Stagger for Aqua’s address.

Upon stepping into Aqua’s home, Clint suddenly went berserk and started assaulting her. The altercation intensified right when Josh walked in. In a bid to stop Clint, he seized the knife Clint was brandishing, unfortunately thrusting it into Clint’s torso instead. At that critical juncture, Stagger stumbled upon the scene. Recognizing his errors, Clint implored that no law enforcement be summoned and that the incident remain concealed from Kat. Consequently, Stagger and Josh paid a visit to Monte in prison and offered him a bribe to claim responsibility for Clint’s demise. Since he was already serving a life sentence for other offenses, they thought it was an ideal way to wrap up the case.

In the concluding scenes of the show, it’s apparent that although deeply saddened, Kat seems to have forgiven Josh for taking her father’s life. As they sat in silence, she tenderly touched his hand before the credits began to roll. If you haven’t yet, catch up on all episodes of Missing You on Netflix.
