As a lifelong musical theater enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Broadway, I can confidently say that the recent revelations about the favorite songs of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the original Elphaba and Glinda from “Wicked,” have only added to my admiration for these talented women.
Having only experienced “Wicked” through the movie adaptation, I’m eagerly anticipating exploring the original Broadway show, particularly the songs that hold such deep meaning for Menzel and Chenoweth. It’s fascinating to learn about their shared affection for the same song, “Thank Goodness,” which adds a layer of depth to the complex relationship between Elphaba and Glinda.
As someone who has grown up watching these actresses on stage and screen, it’s heartening to see them continue to share their love for the show and each other. Their camaraderie and mutual respect are palpable, even through the interview clips. I can only imagine what it must have been like for them to perform together in the original production.
Jokingly, I’d say that if Chenoweth and Menzel ever decide to team up again for a “Wicked: For Good” reunion, I might just need to book a flight to New York City, just to be there! After all, who wouldn’t want the chance to witness Elphaba and Glinda sharing the stage once more? It’s moments like these that make the world of musical theater so magical.
Last year, the sensational hit musical “Wicked” swept across the nation, and the appearances by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were just the cherry on top of this delightfully engaging production. This megahit musical has become a sensation, with everyone having their preferred songs, including the original Elphaba and Glinda from Broadway. Interestingly, Menzel and Chenoweth have their favorites among the songs, but these aren’t necessarily the ones they performed themselves.
The Frozen actress and Our Little Secret alum have been regularly included in the cinematic adaptation’s press tour, naturally so, and have been killing it. Menzel tapped in for Ariana Grande to appear with Cynthia Erivo on a carpet and the Elphabas’ coordinated outfits delivered. All four, Menzel, Chenoweth, Grande and Erivo appeared together for an Entertainment Weekly interview. The clip, via their Instagram, has the four stars talking about their favorite Ozian songs.
In the past, before the movie, Elphaba and Glinda had only performed each other’s songs in public. Interestingly, Kristin Chenoweth expressed her delight upon hearing Cynthia Erivo’s rendition of a well-known Glinda tune.
I’m so glad you sang Thank Goodness. It’s my favorite song.
For those not familiar with the original Broadway production of Wicked, but have only seen the film adaptation, eagerly anticipate listening to the full version of that particular song. Interestingly, Idina Menzel also named it as her preferred track from the show.
Among all the Elphaba songs, that one is the one I cherish most. Let’s keep it our secret, okay? After performing it eight times a week, it holds a special place in my heart.
It’s understandable if she feels that way. The level of commitment required in a Broadway performance, where you have to play the same role and sing the same songs every night, can become monotonous. However, the Elphaba song collection stands out as one of the most captivating for contemporary shows.
Kristin Chenoweth enthusiastically shared that she was aware of her Broadway partner’s preferred tune, followed by mentioning one of her favorite songs from the character Elphaba.
And I love I’m Not That Girl.
As a longtime fan of musicals and the original cast members (OGs), I found it delightful to see them included in the movie, especially given my personal nostalgic connection with their characters’ songs. Their presence not only added an authentic feel but also generated buzz among fans, similar to the controversy surrounding One Million Moms. However, what truly impressed me was Idina Menzel’s handling of any criticisms, much like her character Glinda, she handled it gracefully and with poise. I believe that their presence significantly enriched the movie, and without them, it might not have been as memorable or impactful.
I found it intriguing to delve into the initial concepts behind the duo’s unexpected appearance and how things took an unexpected turn throughout one eventful night. The way their role turned out feels spot-on to me, and it adds a delightful, dramatic flair to a sequence where they truly excel. Director Jon M. Chu hinted that the upcoming Wicked film will introduce another Ozian legend, Dorothy, who seems poised to play a more substantial role than some might anticipate.
Speaking of Chenoweth and Menzel, let’s keep our fingers crossed that they return to the cast of “Wicked: For Good” when it hits the big screen in 2025. I can only imagine them back on the interview circuit, sharing more about their emotional bond with Elphaba and Glinda. “Wicked” is still enchanting audiences in theaters and on video-on-demand platforms.
