Mike Milligan, ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons’ Writer-Producer, Dies at 77

Mike Milligan, a talented writer and producer who worked on popular television series like All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Maude, and Dear John, passed away on December 20th. He was 77 years old.

Milligan passed away due to severe lung complications at his residence in West Hills, California, as confirmed by his representative to The Hollywood Reporter.

As a born and bred Angelino on January 28, 1947, I proudly call myself a product of Los Angeles. After my years at Loyola Marymount University, I had the honor to serve in the Air Force.

Over time, Milligan developed a deep love for writing and production, collaborating with his longtime writing partner Jay Moriarty on numerous projects. Their joint efforts led to the creation and production of multiple acclaimed TV series, including 49 episodes of Norman Lear’s The Jeffersons (1978-81). This dynamic duo was honored with an NAACP Image Award for their work on the show, which addressed sensitive topics like suicide, transgender identity, and white supremacy in American sitcoms – groundbreaking subject matters for the genre at that time.

For over 50 years, Milligan was a member of the Writers Guild of America. During this time, he also created and oversaw episodes for shows such as All in the Family (1976), Good Times (1974), What’s Happening Now (1985-88), Maude (1975), Dear John (1989-91), Here and Now (1992) and Melba (1986).

Additionally, Milligan co-created and authored the original Telemundo series “Los Beltran” (1990-2001) alongside Carlos Bermudez. This sitcom was honored with an Alma Award for its outstanding comedy, a Golden Eagle Award for exceptional comedy, and an Imagen Foundation Award for its top-notch comedic content.

Beyond his television endeavors, Milligan teamed up with his partner John Harper to conduct workshops on Trauma Informed Care, specifically addressing homelessness issues, for various non-profit organizations nationwide.

Among those who carry on are his spouse, Jill; his child, John Milligan; his sibling, Jeri (Milligan) Gesto; along with his stepdaughters, Dionn Avant and Mischon Beneda.

A memorial service is being planned for later this year.
