Recently, Bill Skarsgard’s portrayal of Count Orlok has left a profound impact on Roger Eggers’ work, with the actress finding it particularly terrifying. However, in a recent interview, she confessed that as a child, it wasn’t Skarsgard’s character that truly scared her; instead, it was a dark fantasy movie starring her own father which left a lasting impression on her.
Based on Lily-Rose’s account, watching Tim Burton’s 1990 film featuring Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands left a lasting impact. In the movie, Edward, a misunderstood and mistreated character, is initially welcomed by a small town community before they turn against him after being manipulated into believing he was a dangerous individual. This unfortunate sequence of events in the film, Lily-Rose shared with Harper’s Bazaar UK, caused her some distress.
I found it deeply distressing, not because he seemed frightening, but because everyone was treating him so harshly. This made me extremely upset. I still recall feeling utterly terrified by the situation, which is unusual given my limited memories from that time. It’s a painful recollection from my childhood.
Interestingly, the actress confessed that her empathy towards Edward bears a striking resemblance to how she identifies with her vampire antagonist in her latest film. She further noted:
Edward is the heroic character while Nosferatu is more antagonistic, yet I find myself strangely compassionate towards Nosferatu. Is it unusual to feel this way?
‘Edward Scissorhands’ Continues to Be a Much-Loved Classic
For approximately three decades, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have been strongly associated due to their frequent collaborations on numerous films that often appear on “best of” lists. It was a film like “Edward Scissorhands” that solidified Tim Burton’s unique visual design style, and this project significantly boosted Johnny Depp’s career to unprecedented heights.
By blending the rhythm of “Frankenstein” with the enchantment of a Grimm Brothers fairy tale, Edward Scissorhands offers scenes that would linger in the minds of children seeing it for the first time. As Lily-Rose points out, the ending stands out as a heartrending and chilling conclusion, and although the film has fantastical aspects, its impact resonates deeply with many individuals who identify as societal outcasts.
Although it might seem unusual for Lily-Rose to feel the same level of empathy towards the “monster” in Nosferatu as she does for the tragic character in Edward Scissorhands, both tales share common ground, as they both depict characters seeking love and acceptance in their unique ways. However, it’s worth noting that Count Orlok doesn’t win hearts with his methods. Nevertheless, there appears to be a resonance for Lily-Rose in the tragic plight of Count Orlok, much like the impact Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Edward Scissorhands had nearly 35 years ago.
