Golden Globes: ‘Emilia Peréz’ Star Karla Sofía Gascón Says “Light Always Wins Over Darkness” in Emotional Acceptance Speech

On Sunday night at the Golden Globes, Emilia Perez clinched the last award of the ceremony – Best Comedy or Musical. During an emotionally charged acceptance speech, Karla Sofia Gascón, the star, conveyed a message of optimism.

Tonight, I selected this dress color that represents Buddhism, as it symbolizes a message of optimism for you: the radiance will always conquer the shadows, Gascón expressed. There’s much more I wish to convey to you since you hold the power to imprison us or cause harm, yet you can never seize our spirit, our resilience, or our identity. And so, I want to tell you, find your voice and declare, ‘I am who I am, not who you demand me to be.’

I’m captivated by the storyline of “Emilia Perez,” where I, as a character, am a cartel leader (Gascón) seeking an attorney’s (Saldaña) help to stage my death and embrace my true identity as a woman. Selena Gomez graces our screens in this role too. Remarkably, “Emilia Pérez” was the breakout performance for Gascón, making waves with its daring crime musical style, which Netflix acquired at Cannes. History was made when Gascón took home the Best Actress award at Cannes, marking a groundbreaking moment as it was the first time a transgender woman had ever received this honor.

At the Globes, Emilia Perez was up against five other nominees: Anora (Neon), Challengers (Amazon Studios), A Real Pain (Searchlight Pictures), The Substance (Mubi), and Wicked (Universal Pictures).

At the award ceremony, Nicolas Cage handed out an award, which was then received by director, writer, and producer Jacques Audiard before being passed on to Gascón. In addition, Emilia Pérez won the award for Best Non-English Language Film, while “El Mal” took home the prize for Best Original Song and Saldaña was recognized as Best Supporting Actress. Going into Sunday’s event, Emilia Pérez had received the most nominations of any feature film with a total of 10.

The Golden Globe Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is a partnership between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge, the same entities that own The Hollywood Reporter.
