Demi Moore Wins Best Actress for ‘The Substance’ at Golden Globes 2025

2025 saw a significant shift at the Golden Globes, as long-ignored actors finally received their due recognition. FX’s Shogun triumphed with multiple top awards, and Colin Farrell was awarded Best Actor in a Limited Series – Drama for his exceptional work in The Penguin. However, the real star of the evening was Demi Moore, who after a 30-year wait, finally claimed her first major acting award for her remarkable performance in The Substance.

Demi Moore clinched the Best Actress title for a Musical/Comedy Motion Picture, an award she gracefully received for her chilling performance in “The Substance”, a horror flick on Mubi. Although some may argue about its classification as a musical or comedy, her win was undeniably merited. Speechless with joy, the actress humbly admitted in her acceptance speech that she was currently in a state of shock. In her heartfelt words, Moore reminisced about her lengthy acting journey and the absence of Academy Awards and Golden Globes from her collection. She expressed:

For more than four decades, I’ve been working at my craft as an actor. It’s only now, for the very first time, that I’ve managed to win something in this field.

Furthermore, Moore shared a distressing exchange with a producer who asserted that she wouldn’t secure an accolade of prestige, such as a Golden Globe.

30 years ago, a producer called me a ‘popcorn actress,’ meaning I wasn’t valued or respected beyond my ability to make profitable movies. I accepted this label, believing it meant I couldn’t be recognized for my work. This belief slowly eroded my self-worth until I questioned if I had fulfilled my purpose and perhaps reached the end of my career.

‘The Substance’ Stopped Demi Moore From Retiring

In the film titled “The Substance“, directed by Coralie Fargeat, Demi Moore portrays Elisabeth Sparkle, a struggling actress whose career is on the wane. To revitalize herself, she decides to experiment with a drug known as The Substance, which supposedly reveals one’s youthful self. This movie, released in 2024, is a body horror masterpiece with exceptional visuals, and its climax stands out among all other films of the year for being particularly wild.

During her speech, she shared how the film, “The Substance“, sparked her desire to keep acting, much like the title element revived Elisabeth Sparkle’s career in the movie. “An extraordinary, daring, brave, and utterly insane script named The Substance landed on my desk, and the universe whispered that your journey isn’t over,” she went on. “I am incredibly thankful to Coralie [Fargeat] for having faith in me.

In addition to Demi Moore, “The Substance” features Margaret Qualley portraying Elisabeth Sparkle’s alternative character, Sue. Notably, Qualley was recognized for her role with a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes (known for their lack of creative title choices), but Zoe Saldaña’s performance in the musical film “Emilia Perez” took home the award instead. As of now, “The Substance” is available to stream on Mubi.
