The highly anticipated WWE debut on Netflix featured an array of renowned wrestling personalities, prompting thunderous applause as they graced the stage or appeared on the big screen. However, one iconic figure was met with a deafening chorus of boos instead – Hulk Hogan. This unfavorable response echoed through the arena, filled with close to 20,000 spectators. The incident sparked intense discussions online, with some attributing the reaction to Hulk Hogan’s political views and the event’s location in Los Angeles. Yet, the reality is much more intricate than that.
It’s clear that politics might have influenced the response he received last night, but if it had happened in a more conservative area, it probably would have been less critical. However, it’s important to note that Hulk Hogan has had a complex relationship with the wrestling community for over three decades. In truth, there may be no one in the history of the sport who has contributed both positively and negatively as much as Hulk Hogan.
During the late 80s to early 90s, Hogan’s tenure as a heroic figure (babyface) propelled wrestling out of obscurity into mainstream popularity, with over 30 million viewers tuning in for a WWE episode he headlined in 1988. His transformation into a villain (heel) in 1996 played a significant role in the revival of wrestling’s popularity during its second major expansion, The Attitude Era. His iconic matches and collaborations with wrestlers such as Andre The Giant, Randy Savage, The Ultimate Warrior, and The Rock continue to be celebrated. There is no doubt that he is one of the most significant figures in wrestling history and was undoubtedly adored by many at his prime.
However, it’s important to note that Hogan’s wrestling journey wasn’t all about triumphs. It was also marked by a prolonged period of backstage maneuvering and allegations of refusing to lose to emerging talent, or at least not losing in a manner that boosted their characters. Following his main event appearances in seven out of the first eight WrestleManias, WWE was preparing to pass the baton to a new crop of stars, notably Bret Hart and Yokozuna, who were slated to headline WrestleMania 9. However, after a discussion with Vince McMahon, the event concluded unexpectedly as Hogan interjected their match, snatching the title in less than thirty seconds. This quick title change remains a notable blunder that continues to resonate decades later.
In many instances throughout Hogan’s career, there were opportunities for others to shine or for the business itself to benefit, yet these moments often didn’t pan out as expected. Even when he intentionally lost, he managed to maintain his own reputation in a favorable light. For example, against Andre The Giant in ’88, he raised his shoulder before the count of three, implying that he hadn’t been defeated fairly. Similarly, in his fight with The Ultimate Warrior in ’90, he kicked out at 3.00001 seconds to preserve the integrity of his character. In his match against Sting in ’97, he initially won but the victory was later nullified due to last-minute script changes and a technicality.
Throughout his entire tenure in WWE and WCW, Hogan was pinned or forced to submit only 14 times. On numerous instances when he was supposedly instructed to lose, he opted to leave the company or threatened to do so until the outcome was modified. There are some instances, particularly towards the end of his career, where he did lose honestly to some up-and-coming stars (most notably The Rock at WrestleMania 18), but after listening to many interviews with sports legends, you’ll often hear stories about times when they were supposed to defeat Hogan, and he would say something like, “That doesn’t sit well with me, buddy.
Due to various reasons discussed earlier, there has always been a lingering resentment towards Hulk Hogan among dedicated wrestling enthusiasts. As a result, when a character is overpowered or wins a match that seems illogical for their persona, fans often rename the character to Hogan as a symbolic expression of their disapproval. For instance, when Rhea Ripley regained the title, it came as no surprise to me because she’s been known as Rhea Hogan in some circles. Similarly, I’m not shocked that Cody Rhodes hasn’t suffered a clean loss for nearly a year now.
If only Hogan’s story ended there, he wouldn’t receive boos. There are many other well-known figures in wrestling who have used their backstage influence to remain prominent. Regrettably, aside from wrestling-related problems, there is a significant history of personal issues beyond the business as well.
Discussing the prolonged pattern of fabricating facts during interviews might be one topic. Another could be his sudden withdrawal from a biopic at the last possible moment. The steroid trial is another point, as well as the leaked sex tape involving a friend’s spouse and subsequent legal action. However, the most pressing concern revolves around allegations of racist comments throughout history.
In the year 2015, it was discovered that Hogan had been secretly recorded using racial slurs multiple times, expressing his wish for his daughter not to date Black men. Following an investigation, additional tapes emerged, including one where he expressed hope that his incarcerated son wouldn’t be housed with any Black inmates. After issuing an apology during an interview, the WWE terminated his legends contract and avoided referencing him for over three years. Since 2018, Hogan has made occasional appearances, receiving a positive response at some events while facing mixed reactions at others.
Beyond that, there’s also the political aspect. Last year, Hogan attended The Republican National Convention to endorse Donald Trump, and has since voiced his support for him in multiple interviews. This approval of a right-wing leader hasn’t gone down well with certain fans, and it undeniably contributed to last night’s events, considering that the gathering occurred in Los Angeles – a region known for its progressive leanings within the U.S.
It’s worth noting that Hulk Hogan isn’t alone among classic WWE figures in having conservative connections. The Undertaker, who received a warm welcome during Raw’s premiere on Netflix, has released an endorsement video for Donald Trump. Stephanie McMahon, who garnered a huge cheer when she appeared on screen, is the daughter of Linda McMahon, who was recently appointed as Secretary of Education under President Trump. Kane, one of WWE’s longest-serving and most popular characters, currently serves as the Republican Mayor of Knox County, Tennessee. The fact that many WWE personalities have direct links to the right wing isn’t typically met with controversy, it seems…
As a die-hard wrestling fan, let me share my take on what transpired last night: Politics was indeed a player in the events, but it’s important to clarify that Hulk Hogan wasn’t booed due to his political stances. Instead, it’s been a rollercoaster ride of emotions between him and us fans for three decades, and the sky-high ticket prices set the stage for an arena packed with longtime wrestling enthusiasts. These weren’t the casual fans excited about Hulk Hogan’s presence; instead, they were folks still harboring resentment from Starrcade ’97 and those who caught wind of his controversial comments back in the day. The lingering animosity, combined with his political leanings and the average LA resident’s political views, stirred up a whirlwind of negativity that night.
In simpler terms, The future for Hulk Hogan with WWE isn’t clear, but last night’s response wasn’t just about politics. His recent appearances supporting Donald Trump and being in Los Angeles were factors, but true wrestling fans understand the boos represented much more than that. They represented the past three decades of Hogan’s actions – a mix of good and bad deeds that Hogan embodies more than most. After receiving some of the most enthusiastic reactions in the industry, it seems fitting that he also received one of the loudest boos.
