Richard Cohen, a three-time Emmy-winning journalist who had been married to Meredith Viera, the ex-anchor of Today show, for 38 years, has sadly passed away at the age of 76.
Richard Cohen passed away on Christmas Eve, with his beloved family by his side, as reported on NBC’s morning magazine show on Tuesday by co-host Hoda Kotb. As per The Hudson Independent, which broke the news of his death, Cohen had been battling multiple sclerosis for more than five decades and succumbed to pneumonia in the end.
I, born on Valentine’s Day in 1948 in the bustling city of New York, have a story that’s been marked by resilience. At 25, while embarking on my career with ABC News as an associate producer, I was struck down by Multiple Sclerosis. Yet, I refused to let it define me.
Later in life, I found myself battling colon cancer twice. Each time, I rose from the ashes like a phoenix, determined to keep moving forward. Despite these challenges, my spirit remained undeterred, and I continued to make strides in my career and personal life.
In a 2007 interview with the Brain and Life publication, Cohen stated, “I’m not trying to avoid admitting I have the illness, as many people might do initially. However, it doesn’t take long before you encounter the symptoms. If someone were to deny or ignore them, they would be quite detached from reality.
Cohen stated that while he acknowledges his condition is progressive, he does not accept the certainty or inevitability of specific outcomes such as using a wheelchair, being unable to navigate stairs, or being unable to continue working. These are not assumptions he’s making about his future.
As an Emmy-winning journalist, Cohen advanced to become a senior producer at CBS News and subsequently CNN. He also penned books about coping with MS and championed for individuals dealing with chronic ailments. Moreover, he lent his expertise to the “Health and Fitness” section in The New York Times.
During an interview with Today, Vieira shared that on their second date, Cohen disclosed his Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. She often thinks that anyone can be struck by a tragedy the next day, and this revelation didn’t deter her. Instead, she expressed, “I’ve always believed that we could all get hit by a bus tomorrow. It certainly didn’t scare me away from him.
Leaving the Today program in 2011, Vieira expressed her desire for additional family time, specifically with her children, Benjamin and Gabriel, as well as her daughter, Lily.
Time is a peculiar entity; no matter how much we desire it, it relentlessly moves forward. I’m aware that I wish to devote more of my time to my spouse, Richard, and our children,” she expressed from the couch on the Today show set.
