I May Be Personally Weirded Out By Harry Potter Getting Remade For TV, But Ralph Fiennes Is Here To School Me

It’s tough for me to accept that a new adaptation of the Harry Potter series, this time on HBO, is in the works. I’ve grown accustomed to the Harry Potter films and their talented cast, so the thought of a fresh cast and the Wizarding World entering my 2026 streaming lineup feels strange. Personally, I might find it unusual, but Ralph Fiennes, who played Lord Voldemort in the original series, is ready to guide us through this new experience.

During my childhood, the Harry Potter movies played a significant role as I eagerly waited to watch each one when it was released. The exceptional performances by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and other esteemed British actors made the characters from J.K. Rowling’s books feel real. It’s challenging to imagine a different cast taking over those wands for future episodes.

Although I might find it peculiar that Harry Potter is being adapted into an HBO series, Ralph Fiennes recently enlightened me and ET (via @infocmbr) during the 2025 Golden Globes about why turning the boy wizard’s adventures into a TV series could be beneficial.

I find it unremarkable given the age of those movies. A fresh perspective might appeal more to today’s audiences, who represent a new generation.

Ralph Fiennes’ thoughts resonate well. It’s been more than ten years since the release of the last Harry Potter movie, “The Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” Perhaps it’s fitting that the upcoming generation gets to taste the anticipation that my generation felt, eagerly awaiting each new installment. Given that we had to wait a year or two between films for their theater premieres, the current fans will find it less challenging, only having to wait a week for the next episode until the next season begins.

It’s evident that Ralph Fiennes continues to harbor a strong emotional attachment towards his menacing Harry Potter character, Voldemort. In 2019, when the Fantastic Beasts film series was underway, this esteemed British actor expressed a desire not to let anyone else take over the role of Voldemort in the prequel franchise; he himself wished to reprise the part. Given that Fiennes is renowned as the first to bring He Who Must Not Be Named to life on screen, it’s understandable to find it peculiar seeing another actor step into the role.

With a Harry Potter TV series now in progress, Ralph Fiennes has expressed readiness to pass his magical artifact, or wand, to Cillian Murphy, praising him as an exceptional actor. Given Murphy’s impressive resume of tackling intricate roles in Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer, I have no doubt he can master the notorious adversary part. Here’s hoping he understands that this role might require him to forgo his nose and don tights, much like Fiennes did.

Information available at this time indicates that the upcoming HBO series is set to commence casting for the three magical characters, aged between 9 and 11, in April. ‘Succession’s Francesca Gardiner will helm the series as showrunner, while ‘Game of Thrones’ director Mark Mylod will take charge of multiple episodes. In terms of budget, it is expected that this new ‘Harry Potter’ series will match the financial resources allocated to ‘Game of Thrones,’ a multiple Emmy winner. Although specific details about the adaptation of each book per season are not yet clear, the planned release of the series in 2026 aims to span over a ten-year period.

The idea that “Harry Potter” is being reimagined as a television series remains quite unusual, yet Ralph Fiennes makes a valid point – a fresh take on this cherished fantasy saga could be exactly what today’s audience craves. Moreover, David Heyman, the film series producer, hinted at a more faithful adaptation of the books in the upcoming TV show. As a devoted fan of the novels myself, I am genuinely excited about seeing scenes from the books that were left out of the movies being brought to life on television.

Before the new HBO series arrives in 2026, you have the opportunity to enjoy the original film series by utilizing your Max subscription and Peacock subscription.
