No PvP, Messages, & Spirit Ashes in ‘ELDEN RING: NIGHTREIGN’ According to Director

Additional information has surfaced about the eagerly awaited spin-off from Hidetaka Miyazaki’s acclaimed fantasy masterpiece, Elden Ring. Regrettably, Elden Ring: Nightreign will not feature player-created messages, Player versus Player interactions, or Spirit Ashes.

In a NIGHTREIGN game, since there are no messages created by players, you won’t find handwritten notes on the ground that might trick newcomers into falling into pits. This is intentional, as NIGHTREIGN’s multiplayer setup in the online realm necessitates teamwork among three players to navigate through its tough obstacles effectively. Moreover, most of these messages tend to be unhelpful or redundant.

As per the game’s director, Junya Ishizaki, in an interview with IGN Japan, each gaming session lasts approximately 40 minutes, making it unnecessary for players to leave messages. The game is designed such that dying resets the entire server, necessitating the trio to battle the Night Lord anew every time. However, the deaths of other players can still be observed throughout the map, offering a brief, humorous insight into how they met their end in Limveld.

In a shift of focus, the director shared that since “ELDEN RING: NIGHTREIGN” is being designed with cooperative gameplay in mind, player versus player (PvP) elements have become less emphasized.

Players should bear in mind that the game, Elden Ring, may differ from their expectations. If you’re hoping for a narrative deeply influenced by Miyazaki or George R.R. Martin’s extensive world-building, you might not encounter it in this title.

Regarding the game’s characters, every one of the eight main characters will have distinct capabilities. Unlike the original Elden Ring, there won’t be options to customize faces or spirits, nor will there be spirit ashes. For example, a character belonging to the Astrologer class will mainly utilize Carian spells, while a Berserker character will boast skills that boost strength and defense, relying on Rune Bears for combat.

Moreover, during a chat, it was disclosed that gamers will battle eight different bosses consecutively. The fights are set up randomly but keep the same level of challenge as the initial version. Consequently, these sequences provide rewards akin to those seen in roguelike games such as Hades and Dead Cells.

Although the particular incentives haven’t been detailed yet, they are anticipated to encompass potent new weapons, armor collections, or Talismans that enhance stats to assist players in enduring the game’s three-day loop. A fresh ‘Relic’ mechanism will offer permanent advantages for survival, which can be acquired from the Secret Altar.

Elden Ring: Nightreign – A Standalone Tale Unraveled

Elden Ring: Nightreign offers an entirely distinct storyline, set apart from the world of the Elden Lord. This game is played out in a parallel universe where you’ll encounter several bosses designed by FromSoftware, including the enigmatic Nameless King himself. However, despite this divergence, Nightreign maintains a consistent narrative within its alternate reality. Each of the eight playable characters has a rich backstory to delve into.

In 2025, Elden Ring: Nightreign will be launched on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). If you can’t wait to dive into the game, join the Network Test taking place in February 2025. For further details, check out the game’s official website.
