Netflix has an exciting announcement for fans worldwide who cherish Japanese kawaii culture: Production is currently underway on a Japanese stop-motion animated series titled “My Melody & Kuromi“. This series focuses on two of Sanrio’s most adored characters and the company behind Hello Kitty. Visionary artist Tomoki Misato will be at the helm, and the show is set to debut on Netflix in July.
For many years, My Melody and Kuromi have been beloved figures in Japan. Introduced by Sanrio in 1975, My Melody is portrayed as an earnest and cheerful girl who cherishes her younger brother and delights in helping her mother bake cookies. Kuromi, joining the Sanrio family more recently in 2004, is frequently characterized as a lovable yet mischievous troublemaker. Both characters are widely recognized as Sanrio fan favorites.
Misato expresses his excitement as the project, significant for being launched during the 50th anniversary year of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi, is finally announced. Known for his work on the beloved stop-motion anime series ‘Pui Pui Molcar’, he resides in Japan. This monumental project has inspired us all to collaborate, tackle numerous challenges, and innovate with stop-motion technology. We eagerly anticipate everyone’s appreciation of this captivating tale set within our handcrafted Mariland, the heart-pounding action that stretches the boundaries of stop-motion animation, and, needless to say, the adorable and lively characters.
The show is penned by Shuko Nemoto, a devoted enthusiast of the Sanrio character universe from Japan, who claims to have conceived the plot while navigating through the pandemic.
Nemoto expressed that seeing ‘My Melody & Kuromi’ speak lines he penned felt like an immense reward as a writer. Since the pandemic, he couldn’t meet with director Misato or the producers in person, but they collaborated remotely each week, ensuring this project was carefully constructed. The project is brimming with affection for the My Melody universe, which is cherished by people of all ages. Nemoto believes that everyone, from grown-ups to kids, will find their favorite moments and lines within it.
The series is the initial venture into stop-motion animation for Toruku, a subordinate of the renowned anime studio WIT Studio, known for hit productions like “Attack on Titan” and “Spy x Family”.
