‘I Still Want To Go Back To Arrakis’: Dune’s Denis Villeneuve’s Latest Comments About Messiah Make It Seem Like It’s Coming Sooner Than Expected

Denis Villeneuve’s two Dune movies (available for streaming with a Max subscription) are already being hailed as some of the greatest science fiction films ever made. These films have gained immense popularity and fans are eagerly anticipating a third movie after the ending of Dune Part Two. However, the director initially planned to take a break, but his recent comments about Messiah suggest that it might arrive sooner than expected, with him expressing a clear desire to revisit Arrakis once more.

In October, it emerged that Denis Villeneuve had begun writing “Dune Messiah,” a development that thrilled fans such as myself. Frank Herbert’s book of the same title unfolds events years after Paul Atreides seizes power, portraying how this authority corrupts him. During an interview with The Wrap about his professional journey, Villeneuve expressed his enthusiasm for the third installment, sharing:

Upon completing Part Two, I finally understood – it was done. I’d accomplished an adaptation of Dune, a task that feels like an immense honor. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to have worked on it. What took me by surprise is my reluctance to leave Arrakis. Instead, I find myself drawn back to its sands. I expected to crave a break after Part Two, thought I might want to work on different projects before returning to Dune: Messiah. However, the vivid images that kept resurfacing in my mind, my desire to revisit this world remains strong – an unexpected surprise indeed.

Is that noise you can hear? It sounds like enthusiastic applause from fans of the Dune series. Although we may have to endure a delay in the release of Messiah, Villeneuve has expressed his readiness to revisit Arrakis for a third movie. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that this means the blockbuster might come out earlier than expected.

Directing the initial two “Dune” films was quite an undertaking for Denis Villeneuve, considering the desert landscapes essential to depicting Arrakis’ exteriors authentically. Consequently, it would have been reasonable if he chose to shift towards a less complex project after the triumphant release of “Part Two”. However, it appears he’s already yearning for the science fiction realm of Frank Herbert.

In terms of storytelling, there are numerous strands to continue from for the next chapter. The conclusion of Dune 2 depicted Paul Atreides assuming the position of Lisan al Gaib, while Chani departed looking disheartened. It appears that the prophesied calamities in his dreams might be imminent. Additionally, audiences were given a glimpse of Alia Atreides, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, even before she was born.

Currently, you can stream the initial two Dune films on Max. In the meantime, let’s keep an eye out for updates on Messiah. However, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the 2025 release of the next Dune movie!
