Why Ned And MJ Won’t Appear In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Each installment of the Spiderman films has presented unique interpretations of our beloved wall-crawler. It appears that Disney+ will offer its own account of Peter Parker’s backstory in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” but don’t anticipate Ned or MJ to be included in Spider-Man’s origin tale when the TV series debuts in 2025, as there’s a sound explanation behind their absence.

As a fan following the Spider-Man saga, I was thrilled to see how Peter Parker’s friends Ned and MJ worked alongside him in the Home trilogy to combat evil. However, the bittersweet ending of No Way Home left me heartbroken when Peter sacrificed his identity as Midtown High student to protect us all from more multiverse villains. Now that Disney+ has introduced a fresh take on the Stan Lee hero with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, I can’t help but wonder if Ned and MJ will make an appearance in this animated series. Unfortunately, according to Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt’s interview on The Official Marvel Podcast, it seems we might not see them just yet.

The central idea was, ‘Given the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe during that period, how might things have unfolded differently if certain decisions led to a divergent multiverse?’

In the podcast, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt mentioned that the Tom Holland movies depict Peter Parker as a sophomore at Midtown High. However, it seems like the upcoming Spider-Man series, titled “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man“, will present Peter as a freshman instead, focusing on his early high school days before he becomes the familiar MCU superhero. This new series appears to branch off into a different timeline, similar to what we’ve seen in shows like Loki and What If…?, where the story unfolds along an alternate continuity path. Consequently, the characters of Marvel’s Ned and MJ may not be present in this new series as their counterparts will likely be rewritten.

In the alternate tale of Peter Parker, as the events of Captain America: Civil War unfolded, Peter didn’t attend Midtown High. The specific reasons for his absence were kept secret by Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, but we do know that he made some new acquaintances – neither Ned nor MJ being among them.

It’s a world where he never met Ned, he never met MJ. Who might he run into?

The character Peter Parker encounters hails from well-known figures in the superhero universe, specifically Marvel’s Runaways series. One of these new faces is Nico Minoru, who stands out for her gothic style and Wiccan magical abilities. According to the show’s executive producer, she complements Ned perfectly, making them a “perfect match.” It seems that Nico could prove advantageous for Peter as she may help him explore the supernatural aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which contrasts with Peter’s science-oriented perspective.

In addition, there’s an intriguing relationship between Peter and Lonnie Lincoln, better recognized as the villain Tombstone. Although we anticipate seeing this formidable adversary in the upcoming Spider-Man 4 film, he will be portrayed differently in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. This character could embark on a unique, yet harmonious parallel journey with Peter Parker, offering an appealing contrast to his storyline. This might imply that Lonnie Lincoln could become an unexpected ally for the series’ hero. However, there’s also a possibility that they might follow the same trajectory as Peter and Harry Osborn did in past versions, where they started off as friends but later became adversaries. It remains exciting to see how their friendship unfolds.

Despite neither Ned nor MJ being present in the upcoming “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” series, as Peter Parker embarks on a fresh narrative arc, it seems he’ll forge new relationships that will shape his growth and development. As mentioned by Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, characters Nico and Lonnie are expected to play pivotal roles in the show, essentially serving as its emotional backbone. Consequently, the addition of these friends is certain to enrich the series with heartwarming friendship dynamics amidst the action-packed crime-fighting scenes. Catch Peter, Nico, and Lonnie in the forthcoming animated series premiering on your Disney+ subscription from January 29th.
