The Eaton fire managed to save the renowned Walsh family house from the set of “Beverly Hills, 90210″. However, almost half the homes on its charming Altadena street have been destroyed, including those to the east and those directly opposite. The distinctive Spanish Revival property survived this ordeal when visited on Thursday afternoon, though it was covered in ash as the fire continues to menace Mount Wilson Observatory in the Angeles National Forest to the north.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of dismay as I imagine my virtual world being ravaged by an actual disaster like the Eaton fire. This blaze has reportedly caused significant damage or destruction to approximately 4,000 to 5,000 structures, including the home of Mandy Moore and the cherished Bunny Museum that I’ve always wanted to visit. By January 9th, it had scorched over 13,000 acres. Sadly, this fire has been linked to multiple fatalities.
Known as “Casa Walsh,” this was the iconic residence shared by the twins Brandon (played by Jason Priestley) and Brenda (Shannen Doherty) from the popular 90’s teen drama series. Over the years, it has been a must-visit destination for fans of the show, who have been drawn to its picturesque neighborhood characterized by Craftsman, Hacienda, and Mid-Century modern architecture, all under the dappled shade of its streets.
However, the Eaton fire has significantly disrupted the picturesque community, now restricted from general access as residents wear masks, carefully sorting their possessions amidst it all. Simultaneously, emergency responders manage heavy machinery to tackle safety concerns such as fallen trees and power lines (with a strong scent of gas lingering in the atmosphere).
In some parts of the Palisades, almost every home has been destroyed by the recent fire that’s currently raging through Topanga Canyon. However, the Eaton fire seems to have affected Altadena in a more random manner, similar to a whirlwind of embers. About one-third to half of the homes have been razed, with the unfortunate ones spread out among those that survived.
One of the Altadena properties not selected was a Spanish Colonial Revival mansion built in 1915, located just a short walk away. This property was previously used by Hacks as Deborah Vance’s secondary residence in Los Angeles, as portrayed by Jean Smart in the series. As reported by Deadline, only the exterior of the building now remains standing.
