Warner Bros. Discovery is leveraging one of its key annual events as part of a significant promotional campaign for its most anticipated movie release this year.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that The Puppy Bowl is making a comeback this year for its 21st installment! But here’s the twist: instead of just being a fun event, it will also serve as a platform to promote their upcoming DC Comics film, Superman. This movie is a significant step in launching James Gunn and Peter Safran’s fresh take on the DC cinematic universe.
As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be making an appearance during The Puppy Bowl alongside my furry companion, Ozu. You see, Ozu was the motivation behind the superdog Krypto in the movie! On this special occasion, I’ll introduce a sneak peek of Superman, and I have a “special message” prepared just for you, the viewers.
In addition, one pup participating in the game will be awarded the “Krypto Super Play” award.
Just like other major entertainment firms, WBD continually employs all available resources to promote its primary projects. For instance, NBCUniversal employs a tactic they call the “Symphony,” effectively utilizing it for last year’s production of Wicked.
Although it may not initially appear obvious how puppies playing football connects to comic book superheroes, considering the significant presence of Krypto in the film, there seems to be a method behind this apparent madness. Warner Bros. Discovery shared that last year’s event attracted 12.6 million viewers across its simultaneous broadcast.
The Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet started back in 2005, serving as an alternative broadcast to the annual Super Bowl, known as television’s biggest spectacle each year. Other networks tend to avoid producing new content during this time, considering it a challenge.
Over time, the presentation of the event has evolved, but it consistently involves adorable puppies engaging in playful activities such as chasing balls and toys within a specially designed arena. The Puppy Bowl is not just entertaining; it also promotes pet adoption.
The 2025 version features 142 dogs from 80 shelters, and it’s not just airing on Animal Planet; it will also be broadcasted on TBS, TruTV, Discovery, Max, and Discovery+. It begins, in essence, at 2 p.m., with a pre-show starting an hour earlier at 1 p.m.
Every year, Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl grows in popularity, becoming a significant cultural event that showcases even more adorable puppies,” commented Howard Lee, head of creative for U.S. networks and president of Discovery Networks. “Regardless of the outcome, Puppy Bowl XXI on February 9 will feature the sweetest players of all time. This event is sure to inspire many families nationwide to welcome a new furry companion into their homes.
