Mel Gibson recently shared significant news about the upcoming sequel to his 2004 hit movie, “The Passion of the Christ.
On his appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast last Thursday, the actor-director announced that they intend to start shooting the follow-up in 2026, with the title being “The Resurrection of Christ“.
Gibson expressed his intention to begin filming sometime next year, stating that the script is unlike anything he’s ever read before, resembling an intense psychedelic journey. The story demands a complex approach, starting with the fall of angels and venturing into realms beyond our understanding, including Hell and Sheol.
Asked Rogan: “So you’re going to have Hell? You’re going to have Satan?”
Gibson affirmatively bobbed his head, expressing, “It’s crucial to establish his background. I’ve been mulling over strategies on how to create that and subtly convey it in the narrative. This has been a long-standing thought process of mine. It promises to demand extensive preparation. I’m not entirely confident I can accomplish it, but I’m eager to give it a try… The challenge lies in discovering an approach that isn’t clichéd or overly obvious. It’s almost like solving a mystery… [The tale] spans from the fall of angels to the demise of the last apostle.
The director announced that actor Jim Caviezel, who originally played the role of Jesus, will reprise his character once more. However, due to the passage of two decades since the initial movie, some digital assistance may be needed to make him appear younger (de-aging CGI help), as only three days are depicted in the storyline.
Gibson has been collaborating on the screenplay for seven years with his brother Donal and Randall Wallace, who also wrote Braveheart. He anticipates that the dialogue will primarily be in English, as opposed to Aramaic or Hebrew, because the story’s ideas might be challenging to grasp, and using actors to speak another language could potentially be too demanding.
As a dedicated gamer, I can relate when it comes to accepting seemingly impossible events in our stories. Just like how I know my character wouldn’t actually die in the game but still get emotionally invested, some people struggle with believing in the resurrection of Christ. But here’s the thing, every one of those apostles stood firm in their belief, even facing death rather than denying it. It’s hard to imagine anyone dying for a fabricated tale, right?
However, I also understand that the idea of someone rising from the dead after being murdered is tough to swallow. Not even Buddha managed to pull off such a feat. But hey, maybe there are some extraordinary events out there that defy our understanding and logic. That’s what makes them so captivating, isn’t it?
Gibson himself acknowledged that a significant aspect of his trust in the Bible comes from its role in helping him overcome addiction. This man, who is known for his acting abilities, experienced a significant fall from grace when he was arrested for drunk driving in 2006 and subsequently made offensive remarks about Jewish people, which were made public.
Life events unfold, and sometimes seeking help from a higher power other than yourself can lead to favorable outcomes,” Gibson explained. “It’s no secret that I struggle with my nature, being an alcoholic by birth. I’ve indulged in drugs and alcohol. But nothing could have prevented me from continuing this path. However, reaching out for something greater than myself played a significant role in helping me break free from these habits. To me, this was nothing short of a miracle.
