Chapter NY showcases “41 Floors,” an individual exhibition by Cheyenne Julien, open for viewing until February 15, 2025. This Bronx-born artist delves deeper into her prior work, which investigates the bond between architectural settings and their occupants. In this new series, she concentrates on the outdoor areas encompassing the renowned Tracey Towers.
The work takes its cue from architect Paul Rudolph, who conceived the buildings in the 1970s with an idealistic plan for urban revitalization. Although he imagined the area as a thriving center filled with community engagement, lush gardens, and vivacious courtyards, these features were never realized for the residents.
Julien takes Rudolph’s original blueprints and reimagines them, infusing these structures with personal insights from her childhood spent within the Towers. Her creations echo the architect’s imaginative flair, yet they also expose the day-to-day realities of living in a forward-thinking project that has been plagued by persistent problems and oppressive elements.
The gallery notes that Julien’s artwork features intense streams of light streaming in from glowing windows and distant car headlights, which could imply a divine presence or evoke feelings of being under surveillance. Julien skillfully blends physical materials like brick, metal, and concrete with her creative representations of human figures, highlighting the connection between people and their surroundings.
As the exhibition takes root at Tracey Towers, the immersive experience of “41 Floors” carries viewers beyond temporal and spatial boundaries, into a realm where body and structure seem inextricably intertwined.
