Hollywood Flashback: 15 Years Ago, Jesse Eisenberg and Sebastian Stan Starred in Fred Durst’s First Film

Prior to receiving their 2025 Golden Globe Awards nominations, Jesse Eisenberg and Sebastian Stan had already acted together in the indie coming-of-age drama “The Education of Charlie Banks,” which was Fred Durst’s directorial debut as a rocker. This film premiered in 2009 with Eisenberg portraying Charlie, a college freshman struggling when his high school tormentor, Mick (played by Jason Ritter), unexpectedly reappeared and intruded into his life in upstate New York.

Initially set to direct ‘The Education of Charlie Banks’ was filmmaker Peter Care (‘The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys’), based on a script by Peter Elkoff, which was inspired by his own autobiographical experiences. However, it was Durst who eventually took the director’s role. Durst, known for being the lead singer of rap-metal band Limp Bizkit in the late 1990s and becoming a fixture on MTV, drew inspiration from Matt Dillon’s role in the 1980 film ‘My Bodyguard’ for this movie. Starring alongside Durst are Jason Stan as Charlie’s college friend Leo, Eva Amurri (daughter of Susan Sarandon), and Charles Parnell. In an earlier interview, Durst stated, “I’ve had numerous chances to work on big-budget films over the years – blockbusters and horror flicks. I’m more interested in timeless pieces.

The film titled “The Education of Charlie Banks” had its debut at Tribeca in 2007, where it was honored with the “Made in NY” award for narrative features. As Eisenberg accepted this prize, he shared that the character Fred, who originated from the South, was determined to shoot the film authentically on-location in New York City. Anchor Bay distributed the movie on March 27, 2009, and a review by THR commended it for taking “unusual, contemplative paths.

After a span of 15 years, Eisenberg and Stan are both nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Eisenberg is recognized for his work in the musical or comedy category, specifically for the film “A Real Pain“, which he also wrote, directed, and is nominated for best screenplay (see page 10). Stan, on the other hand, is competing in two categories: Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his role in “A Different Man“, and Best Actor in a Drama for his portrayal of a young Donald Trump in “The Apprentice“. Meanwhile, Durst’s latest directorial project was the 2019 film “The Fanatic“, starring John Travolta. In 2024, he has acting roles lined up for films titled “I Saw the TV Glow” and “Y2K“. At the time of the release of “Charlie Banks“, Durst acknowledged that some viewers might have been taken aback by his involvement, stating: “I hope there will be people who leave [the movie] feeling inspired and caught off guard by a strong, solid character piece.
