The critically acclaimed, award-winning musical crime comedy produced by Netflix titled “[Title]” has sparked debate, and lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón is responding to the criticism. In this movie, Gascón plays Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, a former Mexican cartel leader who undergoes a life-changing journey to become the main character. Her performance has earned her praise from critics, a Cannes Film Festival win, and she’s considered a strong contender for major awards. If she receives an Oscar nomination for Best Actress (which many predict will happen), Gascón would be the first openly trans woman to receive such a nomination. She’s previously made history as the first trans woman to be nominated in the Golden Globes’ Best Actress category, although that win went to co-star Zoe Saldaña.
Regardless of its impressive cast and the attention it garnered during awards season, the film ‘Emilia Pérez‘ has faced considerable backlash following its premiere. In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Gascón discussed the unfavorable feedback the movie has received.
The movie is facing a harsh, critical campaign with many negative and derogatory comments. Anything I say about it will only serve to fuel their argument. They seem to fear change and are using this as a means to exert control over people, extending it to controlling their thoughts. It appears that when something resonates deeply with others, those who dislike it do so simply because it exists.
‘Emilia Pérez’ Divides, but Captivates
The comedy-thriller in Spanish revolves around Rita Mora Castro, a Mexican attorney portrayed by Saldaña, who takes on the task of helping notorious “Manitas,” a cartel leader with a secret dream of living as a woman. This storyline may stir controversy among conservative groups. The film has been subjected to harsh criticism on social media and from figures like Marion Maréchal, a prominent French far-right voice, who remarked after the cast’s Cannes victory: “‘A man has won Best Actress… the left’s progress is the erasure of women and mothers.'” Additionally, LGBTQ+ advocates, including GLAAD, have voiced criticism, stating that the film takes a step backward in transgender representation. Addressing these critics, Gascón shared his perspective with the publication.
The labels of being LGBTQ or heterosexual do not make someone more or less intelligent. It’s disappointing when people make such comments. Instead of just criticizing, why not take action and create the representation you desire for your community? Make your own movie that showcases your perspective and experiences.
Some argue, ‘It’s important to have LGBTQ or trans characters portrayed authentically, reflecting real-life experiences,’ but it seems unfair criticism towards the representation of Emilia Pérez. The truth is that every trans person’s journey is unique—my own trans experience differs from someone else’s.
1) Another point of disagreement among critics and viewers regarding the movie was its depiction of cultural cliches. Interestingly, this Spanish-speaking film was helmed by French director Jacques Audiard, who doesn’t speak Spanish himself. Moreover, it was filmed in France instead of Mexico, where the story is set, and has only a single Mexican actress in a leading role.
Despite facing criticism, the unconventional film has earned high praise from critics. However, it’s important to acknowledge that Emilia Pérez is far from flawless – a point most people can agree on. Another consensus might be that Emila Pérez boasts an incredibly talented cast. For instance, Jericho Tadeo of MovieWeb commends Zoe Saldaña’s performance as Rita Mora Castro in the “flawed musical,” stating it could be her most comprehensive role yet, particularly during her scenes with Gascón. USA Today praises the “stellar acting and diverse songs” in Emilia Pérez, asserting that they elevate many of its familiar aspects, resulting in something fresh, innovative, and never dull. A third point we can concur on is that Emilia Pérez is unlike any other film we’ve ever encountered.
