Aware that RMS Titanic’s tickets are beyond his financial reach and the ship caters more to aristocrats than people like him, he still decides to take part in a poker game and secure himself a passage.

Influenced by fate and circumstance, Rose’s emotional struggle between love and financial security could lead to losing everything she has. Yet, Jack turns out to be the right choice for her. He not only saves her from a life-threatening fall but also strengthens their bond even more after this incident.

Most importantly, Jack displays an extraordinary level of selflessness throughout the film’s climactic scene. As the controversy unfolds in the ending, he assists Rose onto a tiny floating fragment and sacrifices his own life by remaining submerged in water, enabling her to float and survive. Tragically, he succumbs to hypothermia before a returning lifeboat rescues Rose, who is later saved by the RMS Carpathia.

Jack is a part that any male actor would jump at the chance to play due to its character development offering ample opportunity for a natural performance. It’s no coincidence that Leonardo DiCaprio skyrocketed to fame following his role in Titanic. However, had the role fallen into different hands, it could just as easily have been Tom Cruise who played Jack.

Tom Cruise Missed Out Because of Money Issues

To create a flawless mosaic of youthful memories, seamlessly woven with varying angles of romance, James Cameron sought the ideal actor to bring his vision to life. According to Cinemablend’s report, River Phoenix was initially chosen for this role. Tragically, before he could be cast, Phoenix passed away. Other contenders such as Matthew McConaughey, Billy Crudup, Chris O’Donnell, and Stephen Dorff were considered, but Cameron ultimately felt they weren’t the right fit for the part.

Initially, the director looked at Jared Leto, but the actor declined to participate in the audition process. Subsequently, Tom Cruise was considered, but his fee demands proved too steep for the studio, leading to him being overlooked. Eventually, DiCaprio secured the role, having been recommended by casting director Mali Finn to Cameron. The young DiCaprio was then supported by a stellar cast that included Camilla Overbye Roos and Danny Nucci. With his good looks, self-assured demeanor, and convincing portrayal of the extraordinary character, DiCaprio carried the film, expressing the enigmas and intricacies of the exceptional man.

It was justifiable for Cruise to ask for a larger payment since he had already established his reputation before the release of Titanic, and his involvement in the project would undoubtedly attract a large audience. Regrettably, the studio seemed not to recognize this fact. However, it’s worth questioning whether money was merely a pretext for their decision.

Initially, it was permitted for Cameron to exceed the set budget limit. By the time filming concluded, the costs soared to $200 million. As reported by The New York Times, William Mechanic, a Fox executive, stated that “Jim Cameron gave us two options: spend more on a potentially disappointing movie or invest more in a possibly outstanding one. We exercised our judgment and made the most appropriate decision.” This indicates that James Cameron had the option to engage Tom Cruise if he so desired.

Cruise Was Never the Right Person for the Job

Fans of Tom Cruise might feel disappointed about the job opportunity he missed out on, but considering his exceptional acting skills and dedication, he definitely would have been a great fit. His ability to immerse himself into every role effortlessly is well-known, and he often goes above and beyond compared to other actors. With him in the role, we might have seen even more daring stunts and an increased intensity. Although asking for results similar to Titanic’s $2.264 billion box office gross would be unreasonable from studio heads, Cruise’s star power could have potentially brought the earnings close to the $3 billion mark.

In contrast, Tom Cruise was already 35 when the romantic disaster movie premiered. Given that Jack Dawson is only 20 in the film, there could have been an issue with the age gap, which is a typical concern in teen dramas – characters appearing to be older than high school students. This might have led to the movie facing criticism instead of acclaim.

Although Jack was fictional, James Cameron could’ve chosen to portray him as a thirty-something man, considering Tom Cruise’s age. However, a character who lived in cramped Victorian-style concrete blocks, was unmarried, and seemed disinterested in work might not have been well-received by the somewhat conservative society of the 1990s.

It’s fortunate for Cruise and his supporters that James Cameron chose not to compete with his own projects in 1997. That year, filming for Titanic, Jerry Maguire, and Mission Impossible overlapped on the calendar. Jerry Maguire netted him one of only three Oscar nominations he’s ever received, while Mission Impossible kickstarted his most successful franchise. To top it off, People magazine named him “The Most Beautiful Person in the World” that same year.
