‘NCIS’ Seasons 1-5 Will Stream on Netflix & We Can’t Wait

Get ready for some exciting news! If you’re a fan of “NCIS,” either from the baby boom or millennial generation, you’ll be thrilled to know that the beloved show is making its way back to streaming later this month. With a remarkable 22 seasons under its belt, this hit series has stood the test of time. Starting January 23rd, the first five seasons will be available on Netflix, offering fans a chance to reminisce about the transformation and growth of the naval investigation unit over the years. It’s rare for a show to last more than two decades, making “NCIS” an impressive entertainment legacy as it continues to evolve and expand its franchise.

Initially, the acclaimed early phases of the show starred Mark Harmon, portraying special agent Jethro Gibbs, a role that almost defines the series itself. The show spawned six spin-offs starting with Season 6, and Harmon played Gibbs for an impressive 18 years before departing as a regular cast member in 2021. However, he’s since returned to the NCIS universe as an executive producer and narrator on the prequel series, titled “NCIS: Origins,” which debuted in October 2024. In an interview with Variety, Harmon discussed “Origins” and its upcoming seasons set to air on Netflix.

Are there some tales to share? Absolutely. Will they deviate from what’s commonly known? Indeed… They’ll require effort, and you’re aware that alterations are coming. You understand that there will be aspects within your control, others you’ll need to battle for, and still others beyond your grasp. At this moment, it seems like we’ve fought tooth and nail for every bit of it, but it feels satisfying.

The Procedural Perfected a Basic Formula in Its Early Seasons

NCIS has earned its spot among the elite police procedurals like CSI, Criminal Minds, and Law and Order (including the original and SVU) versions. By Season 2, it found its rhythm with thrilling storylines, interwoven cases, and the distinctive “phoof” previews at the beginning of episodes, elements that remain integral to the show’s formula even today. While the show would reach its highest viewership in 2011, many believe that Season 2 was pivotal for the series as it helped shape the show’s identity and created some of the finest writing and stories throughout its run.

The success of the series has spawned multiple spin-offs, including NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawaiʻi, NCIS: Sydney, and NCIS: Origins. The 10th episode of season 22 will be aired on CBS on January 27th, but as of yet, no confirmation has been made regarding the second season of NCIS: Origins. However, showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal are optimistic about the potential continued success of the spin-off, with both CBS and Paramount being involved.
