Even though the 2025 TV season is just getting started, the upcoming crossover between “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” seems like a strong candidate for one of this year’s top comedy episodes. The idea of “The Gang” venturing into Quinta Brunson’s critically acclaimed comedy world aligns well with my colleagues’ predictions about the quality of “Sunny’s” crossover episode.
It’s disappointing to learn that a potential exciting intersection between the two worlds was omitted from the ABC part of the plot in Season 4’s ninth episode, “Volunteers.” During an interview with producers Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern, Entertainment Weekly gathered a wealth of details about this two-episode storyline.
This part of the Frank/Mr. Johnson power struggle, as even Schumacher acknowledged, was severely undermined or tarnished.
As a movie enthusiast, I should mention that there was once an intriguing history between Frank and Mr. Johnson, a connection I wish we could delve into during our 21-and-a-half-minute runtime. They were schoolmates back in high school, and fate had them both vying for the same woman who held a significant role in Sunny’s narrative. Unfortunately, we couldn’t explore that subplot further because it simply didn’t fit within our current storyline. We might revisit their shared past in a future production when we have more time to unravel their compelling tale.
The backstory of the Abbott Elementary crossover demonstrated a shared appreciation between ABC’s hit comedy and FX’s classic series. It was unfortunate to learn that Danny DeVito and William Stanford Davis would have had more screen time together, considering they were going to have a scrap. However, after Patrick Schumacker disclosed these additional details, I believe I can imagine where they could have taken this potential romantic connection.
Once more, everything points back to Frank’s affection for Shadynasty. Although many fans might not rank “Frank’s Brother” from Season 7 among the top episodes of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” it seems like this episode provides the most fitting link between these two verbal sparring partners. In fact, Mr. Johnson could potentially be added to the list of those who sought her company, hinting at a potential romantic entanglement. While not absolutely certain, this situation appears to offer the best chance to play around with the storyline without significantly altering established facts.
It might be beneficial that this plot element was eliminated, since it could leave viewers with numerous unanswered queries. Simultaneously, the identity of this mysterious third party remains undisclosed, leading to an intriguing enigma developing between the two storylines. If these episodes manage to captivate audiences sufficiently, there’s a chance we might receive more episodes in the future that shed light on these questions and possibly others as well.
At the moment, you can savor the initial part of the crossover between “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” if you have an active Hulu subscription. As of now, we’re unsure when The Gang’s perspective on events will be aired, but what we do know is that it has already been filmed, ready to premiere whenever Season 17 of 2025 debuts without a specific date set.
