As I, a former radio promoter turned tour manager for artists such as Elliott Smith, The Lemonheads, and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, share this heartfelt goodbye, I’ve taken my final bow at the tender age of 58, due to complications from a persistent lung illness.
Farry’s journey in the world of music commenced at Homestead Records, a small but significant New York label gaining fame for its penchant for discovering groundbreaking indie rock acts during the 80s. Starting as a receptionist, she was instrumental in helping the label establish itself. Later on, she moved up the ladder in the industry, leaving an indelible mark at Atlantic Records between 1988 and 1989, and Epic Records from 1991 to 1992, primarily focusing on radio promotion, particularly within the realms of metal music.
Due to her deep love for music and the captivating influence she held over those around her, she was entrusted with the role of Frances Bean Cobain’s nanny from infancy through toddlerhood – a position she held very dear. This wasn’t the end of her musical journey; in the ’90s, Farry transitioned into managing tours for bands such as The Lemonheads, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Elliott Smith, Quasi, Stereolab, and Quintron.
She demonstrated her captivating charm and extensive musical expertise while hosting the brief yet impactful show, titled Super Rock, on MTV.
Jacquelyn Beth Farry was born in New York and grew up within the contentious Synanon community, a subject she frequently discussed – captivating her listeners – with a gleam in her eye. As Janet Billig Rich, a lifelong friend, puts it, “Jackie held an incredible collection of memories and songs from those shaping years.
In 2003, Farry’s life took an unforeseen twist when she was diagnosed with cancer. Displaying the courage and determination of a warrior, she waged her war with elegance and fortitude. Her friends mobilized to support her, arranging “Fuck Cancer” events where bands such as The Breeders and Guided by Voices performed in her name. This encouragement prompted Farry to establish a line of “Fuck Cancer” headwear, using her struggle to aid others battling similar adversities.
Rich remarks that “Jackie’s affection for music was rivaled merely by her quick-thinking humor, charm, and mesmerizing persona. She served as a guiding light for both friends and acquaintances, captivating them with her irresistible vitality.
Growing up, I’ve always had a soft spot for the vibrant hue of pink and for those resilient pit bull pups. Over time, these two passions merged as I embarked on a journey to save pit bulls from Prince George’s County, Maryland. To make their adoption more appealing, I’d dress them up in adorable outfits, hoping to showcase their unique personalities and charm.
In keeping with her pioneering spirit, Farry took up the role of a death doula, working alongside Katie Klakos for numerous years in preparation for her final journey.
She departs, leaving behind her cherished canines, Forest, Ruby, and Mary; her loving companion Aimee Swartz; her mom, Maddi Levine; and her stepmom, Terry Farry.
To express appreciation for her affection towards pit bulls, contributions can be sent to LovePaws, which she has chosen as her preferred charity.
Rich remarks that Jackie FarrY’s lasting memory is filled with affection, amusement, and an unbreakable determination,” he said. “Her absence will be felt strongly – her unique narratives, her wit, and the mark she made on those who met her will continue to resonate eternally.
