Tim Allen Reveals if ‘Home Improvement’ Alum Jonathan Taylor Thomas Will Make ‘Shifting Gears’ Cameo

Is it possible that Tim Allen and Jonathan Taylor Thomas, the iconic father-son duo from “Home Improvement,” might reunite on screen? It’s not impossible! In an interview with US Weekly, Allen hinted at the possibility of working together again for his new project. With his latest sitcom, “Shifting Gears,” premiering on January 8, Allen said that anything could happen. Tim Allen and Jonathan Taylor Thomas starred together on “Home Improvement” for eight seasons from 1991 to 1999. They reunited briefly in 2013 when Thomas appeared in four episodes of “Last Man Standing,” which was led by Allen, and directed three episodes as well.

Anything can happen! In our latest filming, he returned to the set. He’s like a son to me, having spent eight years working together on ‘Home Improvement’. These are all my ‘on-screen’ children, and I have mixed feelings about this situation.

It appears that Allen’s last statement could be connected to his “Home Improvement” colleague, Zachery Ty Bryan, who played the eldest sibling, Brad. Unfortunately, Bryan has found himself in the spotlight recently due to a domestic violence charge from January 2nd. Previous legal troubles have also been an issue for the former child star.

Is a ‘Home Improvement’ Reunion on the Horizon?

After starring in the popular show “Home Improvement,” Thomas has mainly taken on supporting roles in various series such as “The Simpsons,” “8 Simple Rules,” “Smallville,” and “Veronica Mars.” His last on-screen appearance was on “Last Man Standing.” Meanwhile, Allen has appeared in several films, including the cherished “The Santa Clause” series, and led “Last Man Standing” until 2021. Now, with “Shifting Gears,” he is making a comeback to network television. This ABC sitcom focuses on his character, Matt, a widower who restores cars, as he guides his estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings), who returns home with her daughters following a separation.

Lately, Denning discussed his encounter with Taylor during her appearance on the January 7th episode of The View. He mentioned that he had a childhood crush on Thomas and expressed this when they met.

Initially, I was struggling to maintain composure, but managed to keep things casual. However, it’s become apparent now that I wasn’t hiding my excitement at all.

Thomas is primarily recognized for his performance as Randy Taylor on “Home Improvement,” a part that solidified his position as a teen idol during the 1990s. Given his latest acting role in “Last Man Standing,” which was also produced by Allen, it’s plausible to assume he might collaborate with Allen again in front of the camera. Additionally, he directed three episodes of the series, so it wouldn’t be unexpected if he were to direct an episode for Allen’s upcoming sitcom, taking on a role both in front and behind the camera.

On Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, you can catch “Shifting Gears” on ABC, with next-day streaming options available on Hulu. In this show, the stars Denning and Allen join Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. If you’re a fan of “Home Improvement”, you can currently stream it on Hulu and Disney+, while it will be available on Netflix starting February 1st.
