❗️Caution: This section may reveal spoilers from the episode “The Joy of Killing” in the series “Dexter: Original Sin.” If you have a Paramount+ subscription, feel free to watch it, but be aware that you’re treading on potential plot twists!
As a devoted fan of the original Dexter series, it’s a joy to watch Dexter: Original Sin, and this delight is heightened by the numerous Easter eggs sprinkled throughout Season 1. While unraveling the larger enigmas, such as Harry’s failure to prevent his son’s actions, is intriguing, I find myself equally captivated by the subtle hints at future events, like the precise nod to the Ice Truck Killer.
In case you didn’t catch it, an Easter egg from the original Dexter series appeared in “The Joy Of Killing.” Specifically, when Patrick Gibson’s character, Dexter Morgan, was tracking Levi Reed, a Miami Chills ice truck could be seen in the background. Even though I knew that this company and its trucks would feature in the city, it was still a noteworthy moment, causing me to exclaim at the TV and point excitedly at the screen.
Although the car might not be the same one used by the Ice Truck Killer, who is none other than Dexter’s biological brother Brian Moser, this wasn’t intended to create a significant connection. Even if Dexter didn’t even notice it passing by him at all.
Designer Clyde Phillips intentionally included an amusing hidden detail for sharp-eyed spectators, which he later verified to The Hollywood Reporter.
We simply discarded it without a detailed shot or any additional details. It appears to be the same ice delivery truck all over again, making this season one big game of hide-and-seek!
In his recent interview, Phillips didn’t delve into other specific instances, but fans speculate that this isn’t the first time “Dexter: Original Sin” seemed to allude to the Ice Truck Killer. In the episode titled “Kid in a Candy Store,” Morgan encounters a man who resembles Brian Moser from Season 1, and this stranger interacts briefly with Dexter while he is waiting for Masuka, Batista, and Watt.
Title Analysis: ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Creator Discusses Deepening Harry’s Background in the Prequel, Making a Re-watch of the Original Appealing
The creator of ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ explains how they’ve added more to Harry’s history in the prequel series, which makes me eager to watch the original show again.
It’s uncertain if the ice truck Easter egg in Dexter: Original Sin was intentional or not, but given its subtlety, it seems plausible that the series might continue to reference Dexter’s serial killer brother. Since Dexter himself didn’t know his brother was a killer until Season 1, altering this in the prequel could be a significant retelling of the original storyline.
Clyde Phillips shared his enthusiasm about incorporating nods to the original series and intricate multiple timelines in their new production, expressing this sentiment by saying: “We’re really looking forward to peppering our work with callbacks to the original and playing around with various timeframes.
There’s been plenty of conversation online regarding our content and its reasoning. Moreover, this season offers an enjoyable experience as it’s a period piece nested within another. We get to utilize a wealth of imagery from the ’90s and ’70s due to Harry’s storyline. From rotary phones on the wall to the first car phone, we’re relishing in the opportunity to incorporate these elements. It’s exciting to observe the audience’s reactions as they spot these details.
If it turns out that this new story is filled with subtle references for fans of the initial Dexter series, I’m completely fine with that. If Dexter: Original Sin intends to establish more connections between shows, it can certainly do so in the upcoming Resurrection continuation of New Blood’s first season. I’m comfortable with the prequel series altering specific moments or providing background information for events from the original show, but I’d prefer if major plot points aren’t significantly altered.
Every Friday or Sunday at 10:00 p.m. ET, I can’t wait to tune into Paramount+ With Showtime to catch the latest episodes of Dexter: Original Sin. And if you’re already hooked like me and craving more Dexter action, there’s a wealth of related shows available for fellow fans to explore!
