Amidst several wildfires burning across Los Angeles County, with studios working to assist their staff and local communities, Comcast announced a plan to channel $10 million towards disaster relief initiatives.
Brian Roberts, chairman and CEO of Comcast, expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards the first responders for their relentless and brave actions, and also acknowledged the news crews, such as NBC4 and KVEA, for their essential updates during these difficult times. Comcast is prepared to assist its staff and the greater Los Angeles community in our recovery and rebuilding process following these devastating incidents.
Comcast, a prominent studio based in Philadelphia with significant influence in L.A. as NBCUniversal’s parent company, is channeling resources towards various charities and organizations. These include the American Red Cross, Entertainment Industry Foundation SoCal Fire Fund, Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, among others. Additionally, they are contributing $2.5 million to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles’ ReBUILD LA initiative.
Disney, based in Burbank, announced on January 10 that they will donate $15 million towards various relief efforts. This money will be specifically allocated for the American Red Cross, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, and other similar organizations. CEO Bob Iger expressed pride in being able to offer aid to this strong and lively community during a time of crisis, stating: “We are honored to extend our support.
Paramount Global’s co-CEOs, Brian Robbins, Chris McCarthy and George Cheeks, penned a message to employees announcing that the company will contribute $1 million towards various aid initiatives. Similarly, SAG-AFTRA, under the leadership of president Fran Drescher, has promised $1 million for assistance to its 160,000 union members who have been affected by the situation.
Starting from Monday, it’s been a tough ride for us gamers living in California. The Palisades Fire has torched over 23,700 acres, and the Eaton Fire in Altadena isn’t far behind at 14,000 acres. CalFire estimates that over 12,300 structures have been reduced to ashes, and the sad reality is more than a dozen lives have been lost. Thousands of us have had to evacuate our homes and businesses, leaving nothing but memories behind. The film and TV industry has taken a pause as the county grapples with this emergency. It’s a reminder that while we enjoy virtual worlds, the real world needs our attention too.
On January 8, the Biden administration announced a state of disaster, following a state of emergency declared by California Governor Gavin Newsom the day prior. Since then, the governor’s office has issued an executive order to temporarily waive certain permitting requirements for homeowners looking to rebuild, and on Monday presented a plan for tax relief for affected businesses. The financial impact of the wildfires has been escalating rapidly in recent days, with Accuweather revising its damage estimate to exceed $250 billion.
More to come.
