’28 Years Later’ Star Jodie Comer Recalls Real Terror of Zombie Actors

Danny Boyle’s film 28 Days Later reshaped the zombie horror sub-genre by introducing its swift Rage zombies that instilled fear. Now, the director is coming back to this genre with the much-anticipated sequel titled 28 Years Later. One of the film’s actors, Jodie Comer, recently shared that the zombies on set were just as chilling as they appear on screen. Alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes, Comer is part of the new movie, slated for release on June 20, 2025. The initial trailer hinted at the return of the petrifying running zombies, but Comer hints that viewers are in for a bigger scare.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, Jodie Comer admitted she was petrified while filming alongside the movie’s zombies due to their stunt performers playing the infected maintaining high speed at all times during shooting. The star of Killing Eve explained that in 28 Days Later, the virus is transmitted through infected monkeys unintentionally released by sympathetic but misinformed conservationists. As a result, the virus rapidly spreads, transforming those who are afflicted into incredibly swift and ferociously aggressive zombies.

Although aware that she was filming on a movie set with background actors and stunt performers wearing makeup, Jodie Comer found the encounter with the “zombies” surprisingly authentic. She explained, “They chase you. There were numerous instances where I genuinely felt like I was fleeing for my life.” While Jodie Comer was scared on set, director Danny Boyle seemed to enjoy being back in the thick of things. Jodie Comer remembered:

I asked, ‘What makes you so passionate about it?’ He replied, ‘It’s because you need to immerse yourself in it. It’s not something that can be feigned. You truly have to experience it for the audience to resonate with you.’

Who Does Jodie Comer Play in ’28 Years Later?’

28 Years Later, the sequel to Danny Boyle’s original film, features Cillian Murphy once more. While the initial trailer hinted at a world 28 years after the virus outbreak and introduced some new characters, it remains unclear who the film will primarily focus on. Jodie Comer portrays Isla, who has a child named Spike with Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Jamie. Spike, played by Alfie Williams, provides a unique viewpoint on the apocalypse as he was born into the infected world. In a recent interview, Comer hinted that “Spike is a real source of light for her.

While we’re all eagerly awaiting the release of “28 Years Later”, a piece of news that fell short of expectations surfaced last week. It appears that Cillian Murphy won’t be reprising his role in “28 Years Later”. However, there’s hope for Jim’s return, as producer Andrew Macdonald hinted at the possibility in the future. He mentioned, “He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line.” This “somewhere along the line” seems to refer to the new trilogy, which commences with “28 Years Later”. The second installment of this trilogy, titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple”, is set to be directed by Nia DaCosta, known for her work on “Candyman”. This film is currently scheduled for release on January 16, 2026.
