Some movies from the 1980s have proven their staying power, continuing to charm audiences even today. Titles like E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Terminator, and Back to the Future are just a few examples that instantly come to mind. Back to the Future, directed by Robert Zemeckis, is a sci-fi classic featuring Michael J. Fox. Released in 1985, this film about a teenager who time-travels back to 1955 to ensure his parents fall in love so he can exist, has moments that are still etched in our memories. Forty years after its release, Fox and one of his co-stars have recently reunited to recreate one of our most beloved scenes, and the outcome is moving enough to bring a tear to your eye.
At Fan Expo New Orleans over the weekend, Fox (63) and the now 93-year-old James Tolkan had a photo opportunity together. This was shared on Instagram (as shown below), and they recreated one of their famous scenes from Back to the Future. The specific scene depicted Tolkan’s character, Principal Strickland, scolding Fox’s Marty McFly, played by Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown. After reprimanding him for his associates, Strickland pointed a finger at McFly and said, “You have a significant attitude issue, McFly. You’re lazy!
Lazy people never improve and Mr. Strickland will definitely remind you,” said the Instagram caption. “Michael J. Fox and James Tolkan met up again at #FANEXPONewOrleans2025 today, and it was just like old days.” Yes, it truly was, as their photo brought back memories of how amazing ‘Back to the Future’ is, and no matter how hard we try, we can never escape the passage of time. Over the years since the movie came out, Fox received a Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis, which affected his acting career, while Tolkan appeared in various films such as ‘Back to the Future’ sequels and 2015’s ‘Bone Tomahawk’. Can you believe he’s now 93? Time really does move fast.
‘Back to the Future’ Will Never Get Another Sequel
In contrast to many 80s and 90s films being remade today for contemporary audiences, fans can rest assured that the original Back to the Future trilogy will never be rebooted. As per director Zemeckis, the series doesn’t require a follow-up sequel and should instead be preserved as is. During his recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he made it clear that the possibility of returning to the Back to the Future universe has been laid to rest.
Every six months, the question arises: ‘Is there anything new we could do?’ However, while there are various possibilities, creating a Back to the Future 4 or completely remaking the movie isn’t feasible at this time.
We’re relieved, since any future installments would probably need to continue without Fox, which might diminish the original charm and potentially harm its reputation. So, if you haven’t seen them yet, I recommend checking out the three Back to the Future movies that are currently available on all video-on-demand platforms.
