As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share some intriguing news about the upcoming movie, “Captain America: Brave New World.” It appears that the runtime for this much-anticipated film might have been disclosed, and it has sparked some worry among us fans. Marvel Studios is banking on this fourth installment in the Captain America series, and the 35th film overall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to keep the momentum going from films like Deadpool and Wolverine and help get the Multiverse Saga back on course.
For a Valentine’s and President’s Day release, the film is anticipated to have a decent opening weekend. Excitement among fans is growing as ticket sales are imminent, although conflicting rumors about its running time have surfaced. However, both reports suggest that it will be a brief addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
At AMC Theatres, they’ve announced the running time for the upcoming film “Captain America: Brave New World” to be approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes, or 118 minutes in total. As the largest movie theater chain in both the U.S. and globally, AMC Theatres may have posted this information ahead of ticket sales, which are expected to start soon. However, it’s important to note that Marvel Studios and Disney have yet to confirm the actual runtime for “Captain America: Brave New World“. It is interesting to mention that Regal Cinema and Harkins Theaters have the movie listed as lasting 2 hours, while Cinemark, the second-largest U.S. theater chain, has not posted a running time at this point.
According to AMC’s running time, Captain America: Brave New World would be on par with Ant-Man and Wasp as the 7th shortest Marvel Cinematic Universe film. If Regal Cinema and Harkins’ timings are accurate, those additional two minutes place it as the 9th briefest MCU movie, edging out Thor: Love and Thunder by a single minute.
No matter if the stated showtime is accurate or not, it’s clear that Captain America: Brave New World is the shortest film in the Captain America series. It runs for only 124 minutes compared to Captain America: The First Avenger (136 minutes), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (147 minutes), and even Captain America: Civil War (147 minutes).
Does the Shorter Runtime Hint at a Troubled Production?
The shorter duration of “Captain America: Brave New World” along with persistent rumors about production difficulties, unsatisfactory test viewings requiring numerous reshoots, and repeated postponements in its launch up until fall 2024, all raise valid concerns.
This upcoming film shares some apprehensions with “The Marvels,” which is currently the shortest movie in the MCU, as it’s another MCU production that stems from a Disney+ series and appears to have faced substantial challenges during its production, resulting in extensive reshaping for the sake of the project. It’s worth noting that The Marvels became the first flop in the history of the MCU. Notably, other shorter MCU films such as “Thor: The Dark World” and “The Incredible Hulk” also grappled with production difficulties and were significantly altered during post-production.
Despite the runtime not necessarily determining a movie’s quality, it’s worth noting that films like “Doctor Strange,” which is one of the shorter Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, has proven to be highly successful. For instance, it received an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $677 million globally. On the other hand, “Eternals,” the third longest MCU film, had a disappointing run despite its length. It was the first movie in the franchise to receive a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes, with 47%, and although it managed to earn $402 million during a time when audiences were cautious about returning to cinemas due to COVID-19, it is now considered one of the MCU’s biggest flops. Plans for a sequel seem to have been halted or cancelled altogether.
The future of “Captain America: Brave New World” is still undecided. Although some film enthusiasts might worry about industry gossip, most casual viewers probably don’t know or care about its running time. What truly matters is whether it can provide an enjoyable movie experience within the time allotted to it.
