Miles Greenberg Debuts a Suite of Marble Sculptures at Salon 94

Known Canadian artist Miles Greenberg has debuted a fresh exhibit titled “Marble Clad,” open at Salon 94 until February 15, 2025. Greenberg is most recognized for his live performances that test endurance, and this show signifies the initial U.S. display solely focusing on his sculpting abilities.

Titled “Desire Path”, the exhibition converts the gallery into a ballet of Carrara marble sculptures. These works were born from digitally recording bodies in motion during Greenberg’s 2023 performance “Fountain II”, initially presented at New York’s Pace Gallery. A hacked 3D scanner, which has limited self-correcting capabilities, was used by the artist to capture brief instances of movement. The resulting scans are then meticulously carved into pink, black, and white marble by hand, with the artist providing the final touches.

The pieces delve into the convergence of performance and endurance, contemplating time and its conservation. By blending the sentimentality of traditional statues and the accuracy of contemporary design, this protege of Marina Abramović embodies his grasp of energy and motion in a tangible manner.

A ‘desire path’ refers to an unplanned route that people tend to follow instinctively after walking it multiple times. It usually signifies finding the most direct way between two points. Greenberg describes this concept as having a deeply sensual quality – by following someone else’s intuition, we leave behind traces of ourselves, and these are remembered by others through their own actions. Over time, these repeated actions reshape the world around us, much like a river eroding through a continent.

Accompanying the sculptures are nine-hour-long videos of the artist’s recent performances, including “SEBASTIAN” (2023), which premiered at the 60th Venice Biennale Arte, and “RESPAWN” (2024) from the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.
