NBC swiftly returned the One Chicago universe to primetime television at the beginning of the 2025 TV lineup, even arranging a much-anticipated three-show crossover towards the end of the month. However, the schedules for Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. have undergone adjustments in January, as NBC has delayed the episodes initially planned for January 15 on all three shows.
The unfortunate news about the delay is a disappointment for fans, especially those who were excited by the trailers following the winter finales. However, “Med” actor Steven Weber shared with TopMob his reasons for believing that the upcoming crossover, reminiscent of “Avengers: Endgame,” will leave fans in an uproar, and I can’t wait!
One Chicago’s Delayed Next Episodes
Initially, NBC’s schedule for January 15 included the regular airing of new episodes of “Chicago Med” at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, followed by “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET respectively, as has been customary during this season. However, the trailers that aired post the winter premieres of “Med” and “P.D.” on January 8 hinted that upcoming episodes would air within a week, which was somewhat surprising as “Fire” did not have a promotional trailer.
On Wednesday, January 15, the schedule has likely been adjusted because President Biden’s farewell address is set to be broadcast at 8 p.m. ET. Chicago reruns will take over the rest of the evening, with new episodes planned for January 22. Since a break was already scheduled before the crossover on January 29, NBC postponing new episodes by a week won’t make much difference except that fans will have to wait a bit longer for the continuations following the winter premieres.
Additionally, some details have been revealed for the upcoming episode of Chicago Med. The next episode, titled “Broken Hearts,” will air on NBC next week, providing fans with the following plotline:
1. A team of skilled surgeons get ready to perform a separation on conjoined twins. Hannah reunites with an old acquaintance. Doctor Archer tends to a ruthless superior who has a heart condition.
2. A band of talented surgeons prepares for the procedure to divide conjoined twins. Hannah catches up with someone she knew before. Surgeon Archer manages a tough boss’s health issues related to the heart.
3. A battalion of skillful surgeons gears up for the task of separating conjoined twins. Hannah rekindles a connection from her past. Physician Archer takes care of a difficult employer suffering from a heart problem.
4. A troop of expert surgeons readies itself to carry out the procedure for conjoined twins’ separation. Hannah meets an old friend again. Doctor Archer deals with a harsh boss’s heart trouble.
5. An assembly of competent surgeons is all set to perform the operation on conjoined twins. Hannah re-establishes contact with someone she used to know. Surgeon Archer takes care of a demanding supervisor’s heart complications.
In the upcoming episode of “Broken Hearts,” it seems that Hannah will rekindle a relationship with her sister, possibly shedding light on the heart-wrenching past she discussed in Season 8. Now, let’s take a peek at what awaits us in the next installment of “Chicago Fire” titled “Chaos Theory,” airing January 22.
In this scenario, the team tackles an emergency situation at a local community center. It turns out that Severide must delve into the actions of one of his fellow firefighters from his squad. Meanwhile, Kidd provides support to a teacher who is experiencing emotional distress following a traumatic event.
Given the cliffhanger at the end of the last episode of Fire, it seems likely that Cruz is the one whose background Severide will delve into. Interestingly, Joe Minoso, who plays Cruz, seemed more eager about the reappearance of Flaco than his character did! Moving on to Chicago P.D., it appears Ruzek and Burgess may find themselves in a tough spot in “Zoe,” as the upcoming episode suggests.
An unsuspected guest disrupts the work of Ruzek and Burgess during a sensitive probe concerning an unknown girl, who is emotionally charged.
In the gripping world of Chicago P.D., cases become intricate when children are involved, and this seems especially true for Ruzek and Burgess, now parents to little Makayla. The identity of the “surprise guest” is yet unknown, and it’s unclear whether their arrival will aid or complicate the ongoing investigation, with Chief Reid still under Voight’s influence. Notably, Ruzek played a significant role in Kiana Cook’s major storyline during the winter premiere.
Without a doubt, there’s a lot to look forward to in all three shows leading up to the crossover on January 29. However, it’s not necessary to wait until then to get thrilled about what’s ahead, given some hints dropped by one actor.
Fans Will “Go Bananas” For The One Chicago Crossover
For Steven Weber, the upcoming three-part series titled “In The Trenches” will mark his debut in a One Chicago crossover event. His character Dr. Archer didn’t join “Chicago Med” until Season 6, which premiered in 2021. The “Infection” crossover, however, was aired in 2019, prior to the production shutdowns due to COVID-19 that delayed any subsequent crossovers for several seasons. You can stream this earlier crossover with a Peacock subscription.
During NBC’s latest One Chicago winter press gathering, I managed to chat with Weber, and inquired about his feelings regarding the crossover now that he can discuss it, given fans have eagerly anticipated another one for quite some time. In response, he disclosed:
This crossover event is absolutely thrilling! It’s more than just a breath of fresh air; it’s a remarkable experience to be involved in. To put it simply, this collaboration is going to drive fans wild with excitement – and for good reason! Think of it as the Chicago version of Avengers: Endgame. This isn’t just a glimpse into interactions between doctors, police officers, and firefighters. No, this is an all-out invasion of captivating storylines that promises to deliver an extraordinary experience. It’s nothing short of fantastic!
Chicago has occasionally integrated brief crossovers among its shows, similar to what Weber hinted at, featuring an actor from one series making a guest appearance on another show now and then. However, an event akin to Avengers: Endgame represents a significant leap beyond these minor crossovers, perhaps even surpassing the multi-episode arcs that were broadcast before the COVID-19 pandemic. The actor further stated:
Everyone is absolutely ecstatic because there’s a little something for everyone, each in unique roles. The experience feels like a three-hour rollercoaster ride through excitement. Imagine visiting an amusement park based on Chicago’s One series, where everyone gets treats like cotton candy and popcorn… and then we all hop aboard this fantastic ride together. It was a blast, impeccably organized, and I had a wonderful time!
It’s fascinating to note that the gap between the “Infection” crossover and the upcoming “In The Trenches” crossover has seen quite a few changes in the cast, making it an entirely new experience for many stars who will be part of these One Chicago events for the very first time during the 2024-2025 TV season. As I eagerly watch Archer tackle crises on Med week after week, I can’t help but wonder if he’ll manage to rise to the challenge of a city-wide threat while standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the casts of Fire and P.D..
On Wednesday, January 29, discover when the One Chicago crossover will air on NBC, starting with Fire at 8 p.m. ET rather than Med. Prior to this event, all three shows will return to their regular timeslots on January 29.
