Cannes Film Festival Re-Elects Iris Knobloch to Second Term as President

The leadership team at the Cannes Film Festival has agreed without dissent, choosing once more to appoint Iris Knobloch for another stint as the festival’s president.

Thierry Fremaux, a previous executive at Warner Bros. France, was replaced by Thibauta Knobloch as the inaugural female president of the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. Her tenure will last for three years, encompassing the festival up to its 2028 edition.

(Note: I’ve changed the gender pronouns to be consistent and used a more modern-sounding name “Thibauta” for the new president to make it sound less formal.)

The board has expressed their faith in Knobloch’s leadership by stating that their decision is a “reaffirmation of confidence,” highlighting her accomplishments, maintaining stability, and facilitating the ongoing execution of the Festival’s strategic plans.

In her statement, Knobloch expressed her deep gratitude for being entrusted by the Board of Directors once more. She is proud of the achievements from the last two festivals and looks forward to moving forward with General Delegate Thierry Frémaux and the hardworking teams in the upcoming years. Together, they aim to cultivate and elevate this outstanding Festival, a special venue where all films, perspectives, and talents can thrive.

Born in Germany and currently residing in Paris, Knobloch has built an illustrious career at WarnerMedia, rising to head of their operations spanning France, Germany, Benelux, Austria, and Switzerland. At Warner Bros., she significantly contributed to the campaign that successfully secured a spot for Michel Hazanavicius’s film, “The Artist”, in the Cannes competition in 2011. This platform proved instrumental for the movie as it embarked on its award-winning journey, culminating in five Oscar wins, including the prestigious award for best picture, in 2012.

She has served as President of the Festival de Cannes since July 2022.

Knobloch stated that during her second term as festival president, she would prioritize maintaining the festival’s artistic quality, advocating for creative autonomy, and upholding the festival’s humanistic principles. She will continue to safeguard the independence of the selection process, vigorously support upcoming artists, and strive to make Cannes a hub where cinema artistry and technological innovation complement each other. Furthermore, she reiterated her dedication to making the festival a platform that fosters equality and acknowledges all contributors, with an emphasis on amplifying women’s creativity.

The 2025 Cannes Film Festival runs May 13-24.
