Netflix Action Sequel ‘The Old Guard 2’ Reportedly Suffers More Reshoots

One of the much-awaited action sequels is facing another setback as it’s been reported that “The Old Guard 2,” the comic book movie continuation, will require additional filming later this year. As per World of Reel, the upcoming action sequel, featuring Charlize Theron reprising her role as immortal warrior Andromache ‘Andy’ of Scythia, is scheduled for “more additional photography” in the early summer, indicating that viewers won’t be able to watch it online anytime soon.

According to the graphic novel penned by Greg Rucka, the film titled The Old Guard premiered on Netflix in 2020. It tells the story of a band of mercenaries who are actually immortal beings with an age-old history, possessing the unique power to heal themselves. The initial adventure focuses on this group as they uncover that their secret has been exposed, leading them into battles to safeguard their liberty.

Under the direction of Gina Prince-Bythewood and penned by Greg Rucka, “The Old Guard” featured a star-studded cast led by Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. This Netflix production was widely acclaimed (80% on Rotten Tomatoes) and quickly became one of the platform’s most successful launches, with over 72 million households tuning in within its first month.

Is ‘The Old Guard 2’ at Risk of Being Canceled?

Although The Old Guard 2 currently boasts a large audience, there are some who express worry that it might get canceled. This is a concern that became a reality for Halle Berry’s sci-fi project, The Mothership, not long ago. However, those feeling anxious about the matter may find solace, as Netflix has invested a significant amount of money to ensure the action sequel makes it to the screens. Reshoots were carried out in October of last year. Yet, one might wonder why there’s been such a delay? Charlize Theron, who stars in the film, has previously shed light on…

Netflix underwent significant transformations, which unfortunately led to a halt in our post-production phase, around five weeks into the process. Given all the changes they were dealing with, I completely empathize. We’ve since resumed work and I’m genuinely thrilled about it. It’s shaping up to be fantastic. This film is particularly significant for us. I was determined to bring it to life only if we could make it extraordinary. I have a deep affection for this movie.

Details about the plot for The Old Guard 2 are being kept secret, but it’s expected to be influenced by the second volume of the comic series, “The Old Guard Book Two: Force Multiplied,” published by Image Comics in 2020. In this installment, Andy delves into uncovering the wrongdoings of the past. For more information about the comic’s synopsis, you can find it below.

After fighting wars for as long as Andy and her team, their hands have been stained more than just blood. Now, it’s time to face the ghosts of their past. However, Nile finds it hard to find harmony within the group. But the unexpected return of a figure from Andy’s past threatens not only her beliefs but also the cause that the team is willing to fight for.

In “The Old Guard 2,” I’m thrilled to find myself joining forces once more with Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Marwan Kenzari – a stellar cast from the original film. Moreover, I’m excited to welcome two exceptional talents, Uma Thurman from “Kill Bill,” and Henry Golding from “Snake Eyes,” who are joining our ranks for this action-packed sequel!
