Looking forward to watching Season 2 of “One Piece” on Netflix later this year, and with excitement growing for its upcoming adaptation, another key character has been revealed. Yes, Rigo Sanchez is set to appear in “One Piece”, playing a crucial role in the plot. Yet, I’m having conflicting emotions about his introduction into the series.
If you’re a fan of the television series “Station 19”, you might be familiar with Sanchez, whose character tragically passed away in Season 3. Now, he’s venturing into the realm of “One Piece” and taking on a significant role. I’d like to share my thoughts on this casting, as I find myself having mixed emotions about it.
Rigo Sanchez Joins One Piece As Dragon
Netflix unveiled that Rigo Sanchez has been cast as Dragon, the head of the Revolutionary Army who stands against the World Government, in the upcoming live-action version. Essentially, he is the world’s most wanted man, and though he makes a fleeting appearance when the Straw Hats visit Loguetown, his importance should not be underestimated. The announcement that Yonda Thomas will portray Vivi’s bodyguard, Igaram, could potentially overshadow Dragon’s significant role in the series.
Ahead lie potential spoilers for those preferring surprise; however, let me share the reasons behind the excitement of fans about Dragon, while I personally harbor a blend of enthusiasm and reservations.
Who Dragon Is, And Why I Have Mixed Feelings About His Appearance
In the world of “One Piece,” Dragon’s real name is Monkey D. Dragon, and yes, there’s no accident in the repetition of ‘Monkey D.’ He is not only the renowned pirate Luffy’s father but also the son of Admiral Garp. Landing Dragon as a character would be a significant coup for the series, perhaps even surpassing the excitement generated by casting Joe Manganiello as Crocodile. However, casual viewers might not fully grasp his importance if his portrayal adheres to our expectations.
More On One Piece
Although I’m excited that Netflix is introducing Baroque Works characters in One Piece Season 2, it has left me pondering how they’ll eventually portray Mr. 2.
Similar to my discussion on the latest revelation concerning Shanks in One Piece, a significant portion of Dragon’s scenes and details disclosed about him are from seasons that are several ahead of where the Netflix series currently stands. In essence, it would take numerous years and seasons to uncover much of what has been mentioned regarding Dragon. To be candid, even those who read the manga and watch the anime are yet to learn his complete backstory.
In the live-action version of “One Piece”, the revelation that Garp is Luffy’s grandfather occurred earlier than in the original story. Similarly, introducing Dragon as Luffy’s father could be done in the series, but bringing in the Revolutionary Army at this point might significantly alter the storyline. Such a change could transform the adaptation into something fundamentally different, which is why I find his potential arrival confusing.
I don’t want general viewers to assume that Luffy’s father will play a significant role in the plot, as it may not be the case. However, dedicated fans of the series might feel disappointed if Dragon isn’t present to help his son when he’s captured. Ultimately, the way One Piece portrays this situation will determine whether or not I agree with the decision, and I’ll wait to make a judgment until I see how it unfolds in the story.
In 2025, it’s speculated that Season 2 of “One Piece” may debut on Netflix, though this hasn’t been confirmed yet. Stay tuned to TopMob for updates on the upcoming series, and don’t forget to keep track of the manga and anime developments too!
