I Loved Alien: Romulus, And I’m Psyched To Hear The Director Acknowledge ‘Mistakes’ He Wants To Avoid As He Plans Out The Sequel

In 2024, Cailee Spaeny experienced an impressive career peak. Following her role as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Copolla’s Priscilla, she teamed up with Alex Garland for the thought-provoking, apolitical drama Civil War. Subsequently, Spaeny delved back into the realm of large-scale action sci-fi with the gripping and unsettling Alien: Romulus. Both films, despite their distinct appearances, found a spot on my personal Top 10 list for 2024 due to their ambitious endeavors and successful outcomes. Given the film’s financial success and critical praise, it was almost certain that a sequel to Alien: Romulus would be greenlit by 20th Century Studios. As a fan of the franchise, I’m excited about the recent remarks from director Fede Alvarez regarding the sequel’s progression.

Fede Alvarez acknowledges the complexities involved in creating sequels for iconic horror series. In 2013, he ventured into the Evil Dead universe and caught attention due to his intense portrayal of violence. Following this, he spearheaded the creation of the franchise for Don’t Breathe. Afterward, he moved on to adapt Lisbeth Salander’s story in The Girl in the Spider’s Web. It might seem that he would be interested in exploring new universes, but instead, he chose to reimagine the Alien series with Alien: Romulus. He has the chance to revisit this cosmos if he desires, but during an interview with Empire, he shared some reservations, saying: “I may have some hesitation about returning to this galaxy.

A common pitfall when creating sequels is the impulse to do so simply because you have the ability and because the original was successful, as demonstrated by Romulus. However, I wouldn’t proceed with making one unless we have a truly exceptional concept for it – something that truly merits the title.

Isn’t it common for directors to grab a paycheck from big studios without much thought? However, Fede Alvarez is different. He’s turning down guaranteed income because he only wants to proceed with his story if there’s a valid reason. Many would jump at the chance and sort out the story later. But instead, we see directors like Alvarez or Matt Reeves on projects like The Batman, who are patient enough to wait until the script is ready before starting production.

Regarding the potential script for a follow-up to ‘Alien: Romulus,’ Fede Alvarez recently shared some intriguing updates. As a devoted fan, hearing his commitment to raising the bar of quality before diving back in truly excites me. In an interview with Empire, Alvarez expressed his aspirations, and I can’t wait to see what he has in store!

Rodo (a co-writer) and I are currently developing it, and we’re thrilled about its potential direction. We’ve nearly covered all the aspects I’ve longed to explore in Romulus, and reintroduced elements I hadn’t encountered for a while. From here on out, we venture into unexplored territories… It promises to be exhilarating to journey with characters familiar from this movie, to a previously unvisited corner of the Alien saga, and to uncover surprises never seen before.

This year, we won’t be getting a sequel to “Alien: Romulus.” If there is one in the future, it might be released as late as 2026 or 2027. In the meantime, feel free to check out our guide to movies coming out in 2025 and plan a visit to the cinema sooner rather than later.
