Due to the DC Universe’s rapid expansion, I sometimes find myself overwhelmed by the numerous thrilling projects on their agenda. Just as the first season of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU – the animated series titled “Creature Commandos” – was yet to air its final episode, news broke that a second season had been approved. As we approached the end of 2024, excitement peaked when Gunn unveiled the first official trailer for his upcoming Superman film, scheduled for release on July 11. It’s also known that “Lanterns” and “Supergirl” are in different stages of production, with “Supergirl” already commencing filming. In response to this development, DC Comics legend Tom King shared an enthusiastic message on social media to mark the occasion.
Tom King published the eight-issue limited series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2021, and it’s his work on which the new movie – starring Milly Alcock in the title role of Kara Zor-El – will be based. To commemorate the launch of filming, King went on Instagram and shared a textless version of the cover of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1. And if this is a clear indication that the movie will follow the source material, we’re about to witness something unlike anything we’ve seen from a major superhero blockbuster. Here’s the image that Tom King shared:
Gaze carefully at that picture, and you’ll see why James Gunn and director Craig Gillespie thought Milly Alcock would be perfect for a DC role after her work on ‘House of the Dragon’. In the artwork by Tom King, Kara Zor-El brandishes a powerful sword, poised for combat. Although there are no dragons in this tale, it has an air of dragon-like intensity.
Let me tell you, it’s none other than that extraordinary canine with superpowers we glimpsed in the Superman preview – yes, you guessed it, Krypto! In Tom King’s tale, this four-legged hero takes center stage, and I truly hope Craig Gillespie includes him in his movie. If not, then I must ask, why are we all here?
Woman of Tomorrow” delves into heavy science-fiction territory as Kara (Milly Alcock) embarks on a journey through the cosmos alongside a young alien, seeking revenge against Krem from the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). This unique tale, which features Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), and other elements from the Superman mythology, sets itself apart as it brings a fresh perspective to the story. Director Gillespie is demonstrating his ambition to present something original by adapting Tom King’s work.
And for DC Comics fans, that’s very exciting.
The movie titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. As the year progresses, you’ll be hearing much more about it.
