Harris Dickinson’s Shocking Confession: The Line He Never Wanted to Say to Nicole Kidman in ‘Babygirl’ and Why It Stayed!

Harris Dickinson, who played a role in A24’s sensual drama “Babygirl,” admitted that there was one specific line he hesitated to deliver to his co-star Nicole Kidman while they were shooting the movie.

In an interview on “The Drew Barrymore Show” (reported by The Wrap), the actor admitted that he could identify with his character Samuel’s role in the movie as a novice intern who eventually overpowers the powerful CEO Romy. This is because, just like his character, he is relatively new to the film industry and found himself sharing emotionally and physically intense scenes with a highly accomplished actress such as Kidman.

According to Dickinson, it was difficult for the intern to perform a similar task for their boss, just as it would be challenging for him to do the same for Nicole Kidman. He expressed his confusion over how to proceed by saying something like, “Well, how do I manage this situation?

Dickinson expressed concern over certain dialogue written for him by filmmaker Halina Reijn, fearing it might be too harsh. He explained to the director, “There’s a line where I say in the car with her, ‘I’m not interested in that, you look like a mother.’ I told Halina, ‘I can’t say that’. It’s quite impolite, isn’t it?

Regardless of his doubts, the scene stayed in the final draft and was included in the movie. This might be due to its bluntness mirroring Samuel’s intention to challenge Romy’s expectations, thereby altering the balance of power between them.

According to Dickinson, the man didn’t want to follow the conventional path of the highly esteemed CEO she was. Instead, he chose to act differently. He decided to present a cookie and, in a subtle manner, show a lack of reverence towards her, which was against the norm.

‘Babygirl’ is Fundamentally a Subversive Movie

During a recent conversation, I observed Barrymore mentioning that the power shift from Romy to Samuel being “sexy” in the movie. However, some critics weren’t as smitten with the age difference between the characters. This issue, director Reijn has long found laughable, considering how often older men dating younger women in films goes unchallenged. She passionately advocates for a complete normalization of the diverse relationships that women encounter in their lives, stating, “Every type of relationship women experience should be accepted and acknowledged.

By delving into the world of “Babygirl,” I’ve managed to challenge conventional notions about age and intimacy, crafting a cinematic odyssey that is both emotionally raw and tension-filled, guiding audiences through uncharted territories they might initially hesitate to explore. At its core, this film serves as a subversion of another iconic erotic character study – Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut,” starring Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise – but instead of following a man’s journey, it focuses on a woman’s transformative tale.

Personally speaking, Nicole Kidman has garnered a Golden Globe nomination for her work in the movie, and many critics believe she’s also in contention for an Oscar nod. Interestingly enough, the name of my character, Dickinson, hasn’t been mentioned much in discussions about the best actor or even best supporting actor. However, I firmly believe that my portrayal is equally nuanced, vulnerable, and captivating as my more renowned co-star. It’s a shame if the recognition doesn’t follow, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a great project.
