As a dedicated fan myself, I’m thrilled to say that Kat Dennings isn’t a rookie when it comes to sitcoms. Known for her recurring role as Darcy Lewis, one of Marvel’s best secondary characters, she graced our screens for six seasons in the hit CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls. Now, she’s bringing her skills to ABC for the 2025 TV lineup with Shifting Gears. What’s more, the star has recently opened up about the unique experience of performing live audiences today, compared to her days on Broke Girls.
What Did Shifting Gears’ Kat Dennings Say About Performing In Front Of A Live Audience Now?
Following her departure from “2 Broke Girls” in 2017, Kat Dennings has re-entered the world of sitcoms with the show “Shifting Gears.” In this new role, Dennings plays Riley, the daughter of Matt, a car restoration specialist played by Tim Allen. However, Riley’s life takes an unexpected turn when she grows tired of her husband’s laid-back approach to their family and is forced to move back in with Matt due to marital issues. This move reunites her with Matt, whom she has always had a strained relationship with.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement over the return of Katie Dennings to live sitcom performances weekly. When Collider asked about this new experience compared to her past equine-themed series, she eloquently explained that it feels distinctly different for her now.
In my experience, performing for a live audience is simply amazing! You see, before 2 Broke Girls, I had only been involved in small films and similar projects. When I first started on that show, I have to admit, I was absolutely terrified. Navigating the crowd was a whole new ballgame for me, and it felt downright surreal. But with time, I grew accustomed to it. Now, I can’t get enough! They’ve become like another character on stage. We use them as a gauge – if they laugh, we know we’re on the right track. Sometimes, their laughter catches us off guard, in places we didn’t anticipate, making us think, “Oh my goodness, I need to rework this joke now.” It can be challenging at times, but it’s a good kind of challenge – exciting and enjoyable! I truly believe that working with a live audience is the most exhilarating part of my job.
Back when I first joined my hit CBS show in 2011, I must admit, I was a greenhorn in a bustling studio filled with live sitcom fans. It’s no surprise that it took some time to adjust and, truth be told, it initially gave me quite the jitters. Yet, as the years have rolled by, I’ve come to cherish the presence of the audience. They’re almost like another character on set, adding an extra layer of energy and excitement to every scene we shoot.
I can’t wait for Tim Allen’s new show, and I recently discovered an unusual link between him and his co-star, Kat Dennings!
During her incredibly enjoyable stage performance for the live audience, the actress playing Thor confessed that one aspect of the entire experience remains somewhat nerve-wracking for her – specifically, the moment when everyone claps as she enters the stage. In her words:
I find the beginning quite awkward. To be honest, I don’t enjoy it much because before we start filming, I get really anxious. However, once we begin shooting a scene, my anxiety disappears. It’s only when I’m trying to greet everyone that I feel like a 6-year-old who is scared, but it’s also kind of exciting.
Oh, I’m genuinely fond of how candid Dennings is about her apprehensions regarding the filming of “Shifting Gears”. Yet, it’s equally heartening to see her conquer those fears and consistently bring laughter to our screens.
