Regarding eagerly awaited film adaptations of upcoming books, the forthcoming “Hunger Games” movie definitely has me circling its 2026 release date on my calendar. But before Lionsgate begins production for the movie titled “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” Suzanne Collins’ book with the same name will hit shelves in March of this year. Recently, some fresh details about the novel have emerged, and fans like myself are already bracing ourselves for Haymitch Abernathy’s Hunger Games story to tug at our heartstrings.
New Details About Next The Hunger Games Prequel Are Here
Before the release of “Sunrise on the Reaping” on March 18, an extract from the prequel novel has been unveiled through People magazine, which presents a young Haymitch prior to his participation in the 50th Hunger Games.
In Chapter 1, I discovered an interesting fact: Reaping Day marks Haymitch’s birthday. As I prepared myself for the upcoming ceremony, details about my life started to unfold. It turns out I have a younger brother, Sid, who was only 10 at the time, and a girlfriend named Lenore Dove.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but express my anticipation for Suzanne Collins’ upcoming novel, which delves into the past of none other than Haymitch Abernathy, the veteran tribute from the 50th Hunger Games!
The opening part of the novel hints that Haymitch’s mother, whom he affectionately refers to as “ma,” has lost her husband (pa) in a coal mine accident. With twice as many children set to be chosen for the second Quarter Quell, Haymitch feels powerless to prevent it, expressing his distress by saying there’s nothing he can do to avoid exacerbating his nightmares.
I’m With Fans Who Are Already Heartbroken Over Haymitch’s Upcoming Story
As an avid fan of the Hunger Games series over the years, I was immediately captivated by a narrative centered around Panem, penned from Haymitch’s perspective during the reaping. This character has always been intriguing and multi-layered within the series, and soon we’ll delve into his past, discovering what led him to victory in the second Quarter Quell representing District 12. One detail that struck me immediately was the melancholy revelation of his birthday falling on reaping day. The reactions from fellow fans did not fail to tug at my heartstrings: a testament to Haymitch’s emotional depth and enduring impact within the Hunger Games universe.
This next fan was also clearly on the same page as us too:
It’s also worth noting that Haymitch was smitten when he was selected as a tribute. As described in the passage, he was eagerly anticipating celebrating his birthday with his loved one following the selection ceremony. Unfortunately, given that he is now participating in the Hunger Games, it seems unlikely that he will be able to keep this arrangement.
In light of Haymitch’s situation 25 years down the line, it’s likely that Lenore Dove is no longer among us. This means the district might choose to eliminate her character in future events, which I’m not prepared for.
And neither are these fans:
In a way, it’s fascinating how many parallels I notice between myself and Haymitch. We share similar backgrounds – both of us have younger siblings and our fathers perished in the mines before we became tributes. Additionally, there’s an intriguing detail about Haymitch that resonates with me: he was in love around the same age as when Peeta and I found ourselves in this terrible situation.
Again, these parallels are all too much for my little heart, and this fan seems to agree too:
Oh, it’s too much, and this was just an excerpt.
Excitedly, I’ve got the book in hand, and guess what? The announcement that a movie adaptation titled “Sunrise on the Reaping” is also in the works has me thrilled! Fans have been buzzing with their own ideas for who should play Haymitch. Whispers about potential casting choices are already circulating, but we’ll need to keep our eyes peeled for any official updates from Lionsgate about the movie details.
The upcoming prequel is slated for release in cinemas on November 20, 2026. In the interim, I’ll be getting myself ready mentally to delve into this book in March. If the first chapter has the power to tug at our heartstrings, I fear none of us are fully prepared for what lies ahead.
