It has been confirmed that Bong Joon Ho’s much-awaited movie “Mickey 17,” which is his first feature film since his unprecedented Oscar sweep with “Parasite,” will make its international debut outside of competition at the Berlin Film Festival. The film will be shown in South Korea for the first time on January 28, and it will be released in the United States on March 7. Warner Bros. will handle global distribution for the movie.

The upcoming series titled “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” directed by Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel (known for “The Order” and “Macbeth”), featuring Jacob Elordi, is also set for Berlin. This Australian drama, based on Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel, follows a World War II hero as he grapples with his past.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled about some extraordinary additions to the lineup. For instance, “The Old Woman with the Knife,” a South Korean revenge thriller by Min Kyu-dong, is set for a late-night premiere at Berlinale Special. Furthermore, I can’t wait to see Brazilian filmmaker Anna Muylaert’s drama, “The Best Mother in the World,” which stars Shirley Cruz and Seu Jorge.

To honor the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation, Berlin will play Claude Lanzmann’s groundbreaking documentary “Shoah” in its entirety (9 hours and 26 minutes) at the Akademie der Künste. This event coincides with both the centenary of Lanzmann’s birth and the film’s 40th anniversary. Additionally, Guillaume Ribot’s work titled “Je n’avais que le néant – “Shoah” par Lanzmann” (All I Had Was Nothingness) will be shown alongside the screening. This piece utilizes 220 hours of unseen footage that Lanzmann shot for the documentary.

The Panorama section of the festival simultaneously disclosed that Andreas Prochaska’s film “Welcome Home Baby” will start off the sidebar, and unveiled several additional productions to be screened within this section, among them fresh creations from directors Ina Weisse and Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay. The Forum section of Berlin has finalized its 2025 selection, which comprises 30 films hailing from five continents, including seven first-time features. Notable inclusions in this lineup are Stefan Hayn’s “2024”, Vitaly Mansky’s Ukrainian war documentary titled “Time to the Target”, and Brandon Kramer’s “Holding Liat”, which chronicles a US-Israeli family advocating for their loved ones held captive by Hamas.

The children and youth movies Generation program has revealed its entire lineup. The 14plus category will begin with Brendan Canty’s film titled ‘Christy’, while Rafaela Camelo’s movie, ‘The Nature of Invisible Things’, will launch the Kplus section.

The full Berlinale lineup will be unveiled on Jan. 21. The 2025 Berlinale runs Feb. 13-23.
