Television personality Wendy Williams has experienced a challenging stretch of years marked by multiple health crises, personal struggles, and legal hurdles. In spring 2022, she was placed under a conservatorship, with Sabrina E. Morrissey appointed as her court-designated conservator, subsequently declaring her “legally incapacitated.” However, Williams and a relative have voiced their concerns about the conservatorship, describing it as akin to a “luxury prison” for the public figure.
What Did Wendy Williams And Her Family Say About The Conservatorship Leaving Her In A “Luxury Prison”?
Although Wendy Williams has openly discussed her health conditions like Graves’ disease and lymphedema, there’s been speculation among fans about whether she needs a conservatorship due to concerns about her mental state. The Lifetime documentary titled “Where Is Wendy Williams?“, released in early 2024, delved into various challenges the star faced following the end of her daytime talk show, leading some viewers to feel it was exploitative.
Currently, Williams and her relative, Alex, have openly shared their experiences regarding her treatment under the conservatorship in an interview on “The Breakfast Club”. In her own words:
Despite being mentally sound, I find myself feeling confined, much like a prisoner. Currently residing in New York City, I’m in an environment primarily inhabited by individuals well into their nineties and eighties. Even among my peers in their sixties, there seems to be some underlying issue that I don’t share. I want to clarify that this is not a judgment on them, but rather an observation of our differences. For the past three years, I’ve been entangled within a system that appears to be flawed and malfunctioning.
Afterward, she mentioned that she performs all tasks within her single-windowed room, pointing out that she’s unable to venture beyond without someone opening the door first. Moreover, she’s prohibited from possessing a mobile phone or any electronic devices like computers or tablets, and can only engage with TV or radio entertainment.
Following the court’s declaration that Wendy Williams was legally incapacitated during a legal dispute, A&E has filed another lawsuit into the ongoing proceedings.
I confirmed that Williams participated in our scheduled interview, suggesting she has a phone in her room. However, both Williams and Alex have expressed challenges maintaining consistent contact with her. Regrettably, family and friends have not been granted visits. Moreover, Alex referred to the facility as a “luxury prison.
She has the ability to reach out to us, however, we are unable to contact her. This situation has persisted since 2023. The room she’s often found in? It seems like she spends all her time there, day and night, week after week, month following month. Unfortunately, she’s not getting much natural light. I made a trip to New York in October specifically to see her, but the level of scrutiny and questions regarding my identity, purpose for being there, it was truly an unpleasant experience.
Afterward, the show’s host was accompanied by Loren Lorosa, who explained the challenges she encountered while attempting to meet Williams a few days prior to the interview. It seems she had been speaking with Williams on the phone when she arrived and was permitted to sign in, with everyone at the reception desk aware of Williams’ identity. They contacted his conservator, Morrissey, but he didn’t respond. However, Lorosa mentioned that it was then the mood shifted.
Initially, everything was going smoothly, but abruptly things took a turn for the unexpected. Men appeared, questioning my identity and purpose. I explained who I was and that I had come to meet Wendy, to which they responded that no one by that name was present. The manner in which I was addressed left me uneasy, continuing to stay in the lobby felt bizarre. It was utterly unbelievable. Wendy had personally contacted the concierge, expressing her desire to see me… They repeatedly claimed ignorance about Sabrina Morrissey and Wendy.
The extended interview unveiled quite a bit more, such as the news that Wendy Williams’ family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to aid her in her quest for independence. Here’s hoping that the complications seemingly arising from this conservatorship can be swiftly and amicably resolved.
