Commemorating what would have been Aaliyah’s birthday, Mattel unveiled a limited edition Barbie doll as a collectible item. Pre-orders for this tribute to the R&B icon have already sold out.
A popular singer, known for hits such as “Back and Forth” and “At Your Best,” emerged into fame during the ’90s. Throughout her career, she garnered three American Music Awards and received five Grammy nominations. Sadly, Aaliyah passed away in 2001 at just 22 years old.
The Barbie Design team collaborated with Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, to design a doll that wears an attire similar to a motorcycle-inspired leather set, which was inspired by the fashion seen in Aaliyah’s “One in a Million” music video.
Haughton recalls vividly how my sister spent countless hours playing with her beloved Barbie dolls as children,” he said. “She’d make them perform songs, dances, even little concerts. This is a wonderful way to honor her legacy, inspiring fans to dream grandly and believe they can achieve anything their hearts yearn for.
The Aaliyah action figure is now available in the Barbie Musical Artists Collection, a series that also features limited-edition figurines of artists like Stevie Nicks, Gloria Estefan, David Bowie, and Tina Turner.
Krista Berger, Mattel’s senior vice president of Barbie and head of dolls, expressed that the Aaliyah Barbie doll is meant to inspire Aaliyah’s devoted fans and Barbie collectors all over the world. This iconic figure encourages them to unlock their unbounded potential and accomplish whatever they aspire to by embracing their enthusiasm and determination, just as Aaliyah did.
While pre-orders have sold out, more Aaliyah dolls will be available in Target stores on Jan. 26.
