As a movie enthusiast putting my thoughts into words, I can’t help but admit that I acted immaturely when I begged Lorne Michaels to let me go from Saturday Night Live. Looking back, my actions might seem justifiable, or even familiar to some—especially considering I was only 21 years old when I became part of the cast.
In an interview for Peacock’s latest documentary series, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night (as reported by Deadline), the comedian-actor disclosed that he requested a meeting with Michaels to ask to be removed from the team following his first season. This was mainly due to his belief that neither the cast nor the crew appreciated him.
In the series, Davidson recalled that after completing his first year, he requested a meeting with Lorne and said, “Could you please let me go?” Lorne asked why, to which Davidson responded, “I don’t fit in here. Everyone else is so talented, and they don’t seem to want to be friends with me.” This response might have been characteristic of someone in their early twenties who was unsure about his colleagues’ feelings towards him.
Fortunately for Davidson, Michael showed some leniency towards his anxious behavior during the meeting that almost cost him his job. As he reminisced, the actor quoted Michael saying, “You don’t really get the hang of it until your third or fourth year,” to which he responded, “Okay,” and indeed, Michael turned out to be correct.
Pete Davidson’s Comedy Career Is Only Just Beginning To Blossom
Initially, Davidson might have found himself questioning how he landed the show, as evidenced by his reaction to his audition tape in the first episode of the docu-series. However, his more recent projects demonstrate that his journey and development are still unfolding. This is especially evident since he’s gained some attention in tabloids due to his romantic endeavors.
In 2014, during its 40th season, Davidson became one of the youngest cast members ever hired on Saturday Night Live. He spent eight seasons with the venerable sketch comedy series before departing in May 2022. Notably, he still makes occasional appearances at Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center, especially when former SNL writer and renowned comedian John Mulaney serves as host. Additionally, Davidson has recently ventured into the fashion industry, stating in an interview with W Magazine that he’s taking a break to focus on his well-being.
As he put it:
Currently, I’m content with my mental state at the moment. My ultimate aspiration is to be recognized for producing quality work, whether it’s in movies, stand-up comedy, charity events, or business endeavors. I prefer to be visible only when these opportunities arise. Privately, I don’t wish to be associated with dating, as it doesn’t align with my identity. However, the public seems to have a negative perception of celebrities today. The media tends to target a few celebrities every few years, tearing them down. Ironically, I find myself among those they’ve chosen to scrutinize. This unwanted attention has, in a strange way, served as a catalyst for self-reflection. I’m pondering over who I am and what I want to become.
Originally, I hail from Staten Island, harboring a dream of pursuing stand-up comedy. If I managed to achieve anything else because of my stand-up career, it was a fortunate coincidence.
After making an appearance on Saturday Night Live, the comedian has since co-written and starred in the semi-autobiographical comedy-drama film The King of Staten Island (2020) and the Peacock series Bupkis (2023), which is also semi-autobiographical. Although Bupkis received mixed reviews, it was renewed for a second season, but Davidson ultimately opted not to continue with it (at least temporarily). Instead, he’s continued to appear in various film projects such as The Suicide Squad, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and the upcoming Dog Man movie. He also released his third comedy special, Pete Davidson: Turbo Fonzarelli, in 2024.
