Since its debut, the book-to-movie adaptation of “It Ends With Us” has been creating a stir, with ongoing drama involving Blake Lively, director Justin Baldoni, and others. The film, available on Netflix with a subscription, remains contentious due to lawsuits filed by both Lively and Baldoni. More recently, Baldoni sued Lively and Ryan Reynolds, adding further details to the movie’s behind-the-scenes drama. Despite the attention Lively received for her “It Ends With Us” wardrobe, it has now become a topic in the new lawsuit.
Originally, Baldoni was suing The New York Times, but his latest lawsuit is directed towards Reynolds and Lively. He has filed this suit due to alleged civil extortion, defamation, among other issues. In the fresh complaint, the movie director criticized Lively’s costumes for the film, claiming that she received production funds and time in exchange for wearing Lily’s character’s wardrobe. The statement reads:
Right off the bat, Lively started encroaching on the production process in pushy manners that exceeded her contractual rights. For instance, she demanded creative control over her character’s clothing choices. Typically, lead actors get to approve their character’s overall appearance, but they don’t usually dictate wardrobe decisions without input from the director or producers. What might appear as a minor demand can actually exert significant influence on a film production.
During the promotional activities for “It Ends With Us”, Lively’s outfits garnered attention. However, it was also reported that she had a significant say in Lily’s costumes throughout the drama film. Interestingly, Baldoni’s lawsuit suggests that her increased influence over the costume department may have negatively impacted the movie’s production.
In my view, the world of “It Ends With Us” has been consistently intertwined with fashion choices, especially as we were preparing for its release. You may recall Blake Lively receiving criticism when she suggested fans don floral attire to the cinema. However, her team clarified that the marketing strategy was beyond her influence. Interestingly, later on, in response to Baldoni’s criticisms, his legal team emphasized how much input Blake had on the costumes during production. This is as per their statement:
Disregarding the director’s vision for her character and disregarding the hard work and creativity put into her wardrobe by the costume team over several weeks, Lively persistently sent numerous fashion ideas to the film’s costume designer late into the night, demanding a specific style for her character’s wardrobe. This necessitated a complete overhaul of Lively’s wardrobe, which far exceeded the budget and diverted valuable time and resources from preparing the wardrobes for the rest of the cast. At one point, Lively argued that her character had significant wealth and could afford expensive shoes worth $5,000—despite being a struggling small business owner. This change in the script required Baldoni to revise the entire script, which had been under development for over a year and received approval from Sony and Wayfarer. The wardrobe budget significantly increased as a result of these changes.
Discussing a movie’s budget can be tricky business, and this accusation certainly gives the impression that Lively’s devotion to her character’s wardrobe may have contributed negatively to it. The lawsuit further stated that the 37-year-old actress declined to travel or attend costume fittings, preferring instead for them to be brought from Manhattan to her home. Additionally, the items she selected and those chosen reportedly led to the costuming exceeding its budget.
In the passage, it mentions the script of the film. After watching “It Ends With Us,” I can’t help but ponder over the adjustments that might have been made to depict Lily’s wardrobe. Despite living independently in the movie, she is shown as wealthy, given her family’s affluence… so changes may not have been necessary to reflect this aspect of her character.
It appears that the ongoing dispute over It Ends With Us between Baldoni and Lively/Reynolds won’t be resolved quickly, as Baldoni has filed a second lawsuit against them. Time will tell whether they’ll end up going to court, and how this situation unfolds.
I can’t wait to tell you that the movie adaptation of “It Ends With Us,” which has been highly anticipated, is finally available on Netflix! Make sure to mark your calendars for the 2025 release dates so you don’t miss out on catching it in theaters this year. Enjoy the journey as much as I am eagerly anticipating it!
