Netflix is teaming up with Imax for a worldwide premiere of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia, which will be available for streaming two weeks later.
Narnia, inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia book series penned by C.S. Lewis, is scheduled for an IMAX premiere on Thanksgiving Day in 2026, followed by a streaming debut on Netflix during the Christmas season of that year. This significant agreement represents a victory for IMAX, as it collaborates with Netflix to secure another restricted, promotional cinema screening for one of its films.
As a gamer, I can relate it this way: “Having ‘Narnia’, the two-week exclusive run on Imax screens was vital for us, ensuring an extended stay that pleased the cinemas hosting those grand auditoriums. Back in 2018, Netflix secured the rights to bring the C.S. Lewis book series to life on both film and TV. Right before her blockbuster ‘Barbie’ release, director Greta Gerwig was tapped to helm this cinematic adaptation.
Imax is venturing into partnership with Greta Gerwig for her expanding journey in high-budget filmmaking and adaptations, following her successful directorial debut with the movie “Lady Bird,” which garnered five Oscar nominations, including best director and best screenplay. She’s now planning to bring Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” to life for Sony Pictures.
Director Gerwig is joining forces with IMAX, similar to the likes of James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, and other prominent filmmakers who have adopted the large format screens. Notably, Oppenheimer, a significant portion of which Nolan filmed using IMAX-certified cameras, saw impressive box office returns.
Netflix and IMAX are exploring the possibility of expanding a franchise based on the beloved Chronicles of Narnia series. To date, these seven books have sold more than 115 million copies globally and have been translated into an impressive 57 different languages.
