Bruce Willis recently emerged in public for the first time since his diagnosis with frontotemporal dementia, expressing gratitude towards the first responders who are tirelessly combatting the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.
In a post on Instagram by his wife Emma Heming Willis, shared on Thursday, Bruce Willis is pictured shaking hands with a police officer in Los Angeles and posing for a photo. Emma chose the Led Zeppelin song “Going to California” to accompany this black-and-white video.
In an Instagram post by wife Emma Heming Willis, on Thursday, Bruce Willis is seen in a photo with a LAPD officer after shaking hands, accompanied by the Led Zeppelin song “Going to California”. The video was set as black and white by Emma.
When she came across a first responder, Bruce always took the opportunity to express his appreciation with a sincere handshake and the words ‘thank you for your service.’ And yesterday was no exception as she noted in her caption.

The video appears to show Bruce Willis making a public appearance for the first time since 2022, following announcements by his family about his initial diagnosis with aphasia, leading him to retire from acting. In 2023, it was revealed that he had been given a more precise diagnosis of Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).
Based on information from the Alzheimer’s Association, Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) is a collection of disorders that progressively affect the frontal and temporal regions of the brain, leading to changes in thought processes and behaviors. Signs may include uncommon behavior patterns, emotional issues, speech difficulties, problems with daily tasks, and trouble walking. Unfortunately, at this time, there is no known cure for FTD.
Since his diagnosis, Heming Willis has served as the actor’s caregiver.
I find it both heartbreaking and comforting to now have a definitive diagnosis for our beloved Bruce. FTD, or Frontotemporal Degeneration, is an unfamiliar and merciless condition that can affect anyone. Currently, there’s no cure, but we hold out hope that future generations will see treatments developed. As his health progresses, I pray that the attention given to him by the media can help bring focus to this under-researched disease, increasing awareness and understanding about it.
During an interview on NBC’s Today show in 2023, Heming Willis confessed it was challenging for him to determine if the actor truly grasped his diagnosis.
Just as it’s a challenging reality for Bruce or me, it’s equally tough on our daughters when someone gets diagnosed. It’s not just the individual who bears the weight, but the entire family. When they call it a ‘family disease,’ they truly hit the nail on the head.
