After Juliette left for cleaning duties and was believed to be dead, Pete sank into a profound melancholy. Gradually, he grew to harbor animosity towards the silo and his role in its operation. He started defying the leaders’ orders, commencing with refusing to perform a procedure on a woman, whom he had recently spoken to about her wish to have children.

In a significant turn of events, he decided to stand alongside the engineering group as they confronted Bernard (Tim Robbins) and his allies. Yet, unfortunately, a crucial oversight resulted in his demise. As he ascended the stairs carrying an explosive device, past the guards, they accidentally misplaced the timing mechanism for it. Upon realizing its absence, he exchanged a meaningful glance with Hank (Billy Postlethwaite). He was aware of the grim situation that now faced him. Tearfully, Hank implored Pete not to proceed with this dangerous plan, proposing himself as an alternative. However, Pete remained resolute and instructed Hank to leave.

In that instant when Martha disclosed the dire situation to Bernard and the clock chimed, she felt heartbroken at the thought of Bernard not surviving the explosion. Yet, mere seconds after Pete assembled the detonator, it occurred. He was believed to have perished in the blast, giving up his life for the safety of the silo and for his daughter, who turned out to be possibly alive.
