The 2008 romantic-comedy/treasure hunt film starring and , now streaming on , is attracting a good number of viewers. However, this does not diminish the overall dissatisfaction it generated upon its initial release. Despite the movie’s well-known stars, who were also joined by the late Donald Sutherland, preventing a complete flop at the box office, they couldn’t prevent some poor reviews from being published.
In this vibrant, sunlit film, Matthew McConaughey portrays Ben “Finn” Finnegan, a treasure hunter fixated on discovering the submerged Spanish vessel, the Aurelia, and its legendary cargo called the Queen’s Dowry. His relentless pursuit of this treasure has even led to the breakdown of his marriage. Yet, when Finn uncovers a fresh hint regarding the location of the riches, he turns to his ex-spouse (Hudson) for assistance, along with billionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Sutherland), embarking on a journey across the oceans in search of it. Meanwhile, they are doggedly pursued by a criminal to whom Finn owes money. The storyline unfolds as an expected pattern, employing familiar adventure tropes without introducing anything fresh.
Without a doubt, McConaughey steps into full-blown romantic comedy territory, skillfully playing his charismatic, lovable rogue character to its maximum potential. The fact that he reunites with Hudson after their collaboration on the film How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is one of the most appealing aspects of this movie. Alongside Sutherland, the film also stars Kevin Hart in an unexpected early performance as Bigg Bunny, the gangster. Remarkably, much like his roles in movies such as Jumanji, Hart manages to outshine his co-stars by stealing several scenes.
‘Fool’s Gold’ was a Critical Disaster
The movie “Fool’s Gold” follows the typical storyline you’d find in a romantic comedy from the 2000s. While audiences who enjoy this familiar formula may keep revisiting it, critics have been less enthused, as indicated by the mixed reviews the film received.
In simpler terms, the general agreement among critics on Rotten Tomatoes is that “Fool’s Gold” falls flat in all aspects. The actors lacked chemistry, the jokes were unfunny, and the plot was predictable, making it a disappointing watch overall. The movie only managed to score 11% on the Tomatometer, although it fared slightly better with 46% on the Popcornmeter. Critics such as Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian were particularly harsh, giving it just one star in their review.
In a future book by Richard Dawkins discussing the concept of God’s nonexistence, Matthew McConaughey, who has maintained a successful Hollywood career, pairs up once more with Kate Hudson for this romantic comedy heist. However, it should be noted that Hudson’s performances across various projects have been consistently less than stellar.
Regardless of its mixed reception, “Fool’s Gold” managed to perform decently at the box office, earning $111 million globally against a budget of $70 million. Although it didn’t break any records for its cast members, the movie was successful enough to keep going, and it continues to attract viewers when streamed for free. Feel free to watch it now on Tubi.
