Actress Cameron Diaz, known for movies such as “The Holiday,” “Charlie’s Angels,” and more recently, the Netflix action film “Back in Action,” has expressed interest in reprising her role in a sequel to the film that made her famous: “The Mask.” After taking a break of nearly 10 years to focus on her family and being an attentive mother, Diaz returned to the industry in 2025 with “Back in Action,” teaming up once again with Jamie Foxx.
When discussing Back in Action with Access Hollywood, queries about potentially resurrecting plans for a sequel to The Mask didn’t take much time to surface. It’s best not to dwell on Son of the Mask; it wasn’t closely tied to the original film (Ben Stein being the only recurring actor), and is undeniably one of the worst sequels ever produced. However, disregarding that movie, the prospect of Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz reprising their roles in the intellectual property is intriguing. Carrey has expressed his readiness to don the yellow suit and green mask again if the concept is sound. But what about Cameron Diaz’s character from the film, Tina Carlyle? Here’s what Diaz had to say on the matter:
Wow, could it be true he said that? If Jim agrees, well, I’ve been hitching a ride on his success since the very start.
Fans of Jim Carrey have longed for a sequel to “The Mask” since he rose to stardom with his hilarious performances. However, the prospect of “The Mask 2” dwindled over time as Carrey chose his roles carefully, leaning more towards dramatic roles. In today’s context, could “The Mask 2” be a success? The film could potentially work if Jim Carrey can tap back into the comedic brilliance he once showcased so effortlessly. Combining this with a clever blend of CGI and practical effects, and Cameron Diaz’s full return as the charming Tina would be key. One thing to avoid would be using babies in the mask, as it didn’t work well in “Son of the Mask.” Not at all.
But What About a ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Sequel?
The discussion during that same interview soon shifted towards an upcoming film adaptation of the ’70s TV hit, Charlie’s Angels. In the year 2000, a movie was released where Diaz portrayed Natalie Cook, one of three detective agents who worked on solving crimes under the command of a wealthy and enigmatic man named Charlie Townsend. They communicated with him solely through his assistant, Bosley.
The original movie “Charlie’s Angels” turned out to be a hit at the box office and was later continued with the 2003 release “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle”. When asked about a potential third installment of “Charlie’s Angels”, Cameron Diaz expressed enthusiasm, suggesting that her collaborator from “Kung Fu Panda” and “Back in Action”, Jamie Foxx, could step into the role of Bosley, previously held by Bill Murray who was met with some controversy.
