If you’re considering working at Lumon and haven’t seen the Season 2 premiere yet, beware! Spoilers lie ahead if you continue without an Apple TV+ subscription.
In the highly anticipated return of “Severance”, viewers found themselves once again enveloped in the mysterious Lumon facility, as Adam Scott’s character, Mark, darted frantically through the never-ending corridors for the opening scene. The episode presented numerous intriguing sequences that sparked speculation, such as the debut and seemingly dismissal of a new team in the cubicles, but what really captivated me was the stop-motion video detailing the “Microdat Uprising”. What made it even more fascinating was discovering later that the animated Lumon building was given voice by none other than Keanu Reeves.

Following an initial urge to slap myself for failing to identify his melodious voice upon first hearing, even with his attempts to disguise it, I swiftly transitioned to pondering on the sheer genius behind casting the actor from “Bill & Ted” as a seemingly light-hearted and educational mascot. His words, meticulously chosen, aren’t always truthful or advantageous for the MDR team. So, let’s delve into it all after rewatching the scene below.
Keanu Reeves’ Voice And Zen-ergy Make It Easy To Believe Anything He Says
In general, Keanu Reeves is typically chosen for roles that viewers can trust and support, with a few exceptions like the villainous characters in “The Gift,” “Evil Ted,” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s” Shadow. From his portrayal of Jack Traven in “Speed” to Johnny Utah in “Point Break,” and as the leading character John Wick, Reeves often plays characters that are both believable and cool, which makes it effortless for us to side with them. Notably, he also voiced the cool character Duke Caboom in “Toy Story 4.
As a die-hard movie fan, I’d be the perfect messenger for Lumon to convey their soothing message to Adam Scott as Mark, Britt Lower as Helly, Zach Cherry as Dylan, and John Turturro as Irving. Regardless of our knowledge about the actors, there’s no denying that the Lumon Administrative Building has a unique charm that calmly reassures us throughout, even when it presents ‘facts’ we know are fabrications.
It’s tempting to accept everything as true since it’s coming from such a calming voice. If Morgan Freeman, Daniel Craig, or Denzel Washington were the speakers instead, you might feel the same way. Perhaps one of them will narrate Lumon videos down the line.
Creator Dan Erickson Explains Ideas Behind Casting The ‘Lumon Administrative Building’
It’s worth mentioning that while Keanu Reeves was not the initial or sole candidate for the role in the animated series, creator Dan Erickson didn’t necessarily have him in mind from the start. He didn’t reveal the names of other actors considered, but discussed to Collider about how he made his decision on casting this building, explaining:
In summary, we discussed several individuals for this position, aiming to find someone who would evoke specific positive feelings while maintaining a welcoming demeanor. The Lumon building’s friendly atmosphere in the video is reflective of the desired warmth and compassion in the chosen voice for that role.
Erickson makes an interesting observation: Keanu Reeves is an excellent fit because the building, unlike the sinister intentions of its creators at Lumon, is beneficial and supportive to some degree. Despite the fact that I believe Reeves could convincingly play a real-life Lumon board member, his character’s hidden evil wouldn’t deter me from accepting everything he says.
Casting Keanu Reeves In This Role Is Even More Brilliant For Thematic Reasons
In the realm of film and television, few productions and performers such as Keanu Reeves in The Matrix series embody the themes of work complexity and self-duality quite like these iconic works. Is the storyline about the ordinary Thomas Anderson, who initially seems unaware, or is it about Neo, the omniscient character capable of influencing multiple dimensions of reality?
It’s clear that while The Wachowskis’ 1999 film and its sequels, including the latest installment, Matrix Resurrections, may not be exactly comparable, they do share some similarities in the grand odyssey of their characters. Specifically, the concept of Mark heeding Petey’s advice to blend his memories through reintegration resonates with these parallels.
If the vending machines on the Severed Floor were to start selling Red Pills and Blue Pills, along with new items like canned beans and salsa, it might have been too blatant or obvious. However, having Keanu Reeves manage the situation for MDR subtly conveys the same hidden meanings. And this approach is certainly not cringe-worthy at all.
It’s hard to picture Alex Winter from “Bill & Ted” appearing next, but it’s confirmed that Gwendoline Christie, known for her role in “Game of Thrones,” will make an appearance soon to shed more light on the enigmas surrounding goats. Don’t forget to keep up with new episodes airing every Friday on Apple TV+.
